Hi! I hope you're all doing well today.

I'm an out-of-state student (California) who just received a:

People say that good things come in small packages, but in college admissions, good things come in thick envelopes. Consider this the small package, but something bigger is on its way.

From W&M (I'm so excited!)

But before I got my hopes up, I was just wondering what the financial aid is like for out-of-state students.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Out-of-state publics generally have very little, if any, need-based aid to offer. Their need-based funds are usually reserved for in-state students. If you are relying on getting significant gift aid to afford the school, I’m sorry to say you will likely be disappointed :(

The Admissions rep on the W&M board posted at one point that for oos they may meet up to 80% of need, but I think that is the most. Do you have a more affordable option?

It’s hard to say what you’ll get. I know a some OOS W&M kids who got enough aid to go there, but that really isn’t enough to make a generality and in your case, it only matters what W&M will give YOU.

D was admitted in-state last year and the FA package was not very good in comparison to the private school FA packages she received. I can’t imagine the OOS FA packages would be any better.

Son was admitted 2 years ago (OOS) with good FA. In addition to the Federal things like Stafford loan and work-study - there was also a pretty significant amount of grant aid - maybe about $14,000 - I don’t remember exactly - but it was better than we expected.

I have been wondering the same thing, greenpeas :(
