Financial Aid Offer- Can I make it better?

Hi guys.

I recently got a financial aid offer package from Penn. But I think it’s still too expensive for my family to pay.

Does Penn allow and consider students who call/write asking for more money/aid?

How would I go about doing this? Would I explain my family’s situation, ect?
Do I have to send them other financial aid offers from other institutions? (will they match it?)

And what is the most amount of money Penn has been known to give out as grants?

thx in advance

Bump

can anyone answer any of these questions?

just call them

They will match need-based offers from schools they consider their academic equals. Call them up and explain the situation, say you would rather go to Penn, but the offer from the other school is just so much better.

Penn gives out some full scholarships. I have a few friends who pay nothing whatsoever to attend, they only have to take a work-study job.

start leveraging crack for money

the concept of need-based is a joke
call and pray

I've had a fair number of friends get screwed on financial aid from Penn, but the office has always been very good at resolving these issues when they've called and complained. You must understand, the people at SFS are only slightly above functionally retarded, so remember to speak slowly and bug them repeatedly (I say this with the bitterness of someone who still has to do all of their aid forms by monday).

thx for the replies guys

I just received an offer from Dartmouth, and I think its significantly better. But id rather go to Penn any day.

Would Penn ask me to actually submit a copy of the financial aid package I got from Dartmouth? Would I have to physically photocopy it and send it in? Has anyone ever really done this?

oh and just out of curiosity, does Penn re-evaluate someone's application (for admission) if they ask for more aid? Maybe to see how much they want that person to enroll?

A friend of mine did that with an offer from another Ivy League school. He got his offer significantly improved.

no, your admissions decision will in no way be affected by asking for more aid, and no, they won't give you more or less aid based on how much they want you to come to Penn

I think you should be able to just fax the necessary forms, I think there are also specific rules that ivies must match each others offers

Philly, have you ever seen or heard anyone mention such a rule? if u heard it from friend or some other source, was he absolutely sure himself?

In the Yale forum they've said that Yale usually doesn't match HP offers. Penn would probably match another Ivy (or MIT/Stanford type) offer though because we want to keep our yield up.
