It's so sad to hear everyone's bad news. {{{{hug}}}}

I am done as well.

I cannot afford $18,000.

Anyone hear about the national merit scholarships? Does merit stuff appear on the same page?

I heard today that the national merit scholarship award letters went out earlier this week (at least some did) but they don't show up on the status page yet. I am hoping for good mail tomorrow or Saturday.

I checked today and my NM scholarship offer was up. (It wasn't yesterday)

Anyone know if the Engineering scholarships (Walter Kidd) have gone out or if they appear with the other financial aid offer?

OH MOM, ManUTD & Swim4--I'm sorry to read that OSU may not work out for you. Wishing you (& your son, OH MOM)a successful Freshman year, whether it's at OSU or elsewhere.

Penniless, I hope that your son receives that good news--best of luck. Zacsrequiem, good luck with your decision, as well.

We checked the FA site and the merit aid was what we anticipated and we already knew that she wasn't eligible for need-based assistance. However, I have to admit that I was a bit taken aback by the estimated (OOS) cost of attendance, over $35K. I don't know if the tuition went up higher than I anticipated or all of those extra/additional fees add up to a lot more than what I had realized.

35k for OOS? I was hoping it would be more in the 30k range...

That surprised me, too.

2006-2007 from their website:

Please note: the costs listed here are for an academic year (three quarters).

Columbus campus Regional campuses
Ohio residents $8,667 * $5,664
Nonresidents $20,562 ,* $17,559
Room and board $7,236 *** Varies by campus

Zacs,

OSU's COA calculation is pretty generous and includes $1548 in Health Insurance (waivable) as well as $3879 in Books and Supplies, Clothing, Laundry, Telephone, Transportation and other Miscellaneous and Personal expenses.

Tuition, room, board and mandatory fees for OOS are close to 30k, as you expected.

Yes...I too was surprised when I saw the 35K figure when I logged on to retrieve our financial award status. But SamK is right...there are a lot of generous calculations, such as laundry, health insurance phone and travel expenses...that when removed are more in line with the 30K range.

That makes sense, but you can't completely discount some of their "supplemental" costs because, in reality, almost any student will need some (if not all) of those things. It's nice to see that the number isn't flat at 35k and flexible, but that's still a substantial gap when you are OOS with no aid, heh.

I'm still considering it, though... the cost is significantly less than my other school (10k difference).

Zacs,

You're right. The cost of attending college does not end with the big check that you make out to the college. Books and other expenses must be considered too.

I was just trying to explain where the 35K amount came from, because I also did a double-take when I first saw my son's COA on the Financial Aid Status page.

At least OSU tries to figure in all of the "incidental" expenses to provide a realistic picture of college costs. Remember, you are going to have to figure in all of these types of expenses at ANY college...whether they do it for you or not.

I'm an In-State student and I also got a crappy financial aid package from OSU. Miami University was FAR more generous and though MU is more expensive, it would come out cheaper with the financial aid (too bad I really don't want to go there). MU also included incidentals in their calculation.

Has anyone received written verification of the financial aid offers?

We received a letter two days ago. It had the estimated charges listed at the top. In a lower section it listed the scholarships and broke down the amount into each quarter. They credit 1/3 for each quarter.

We received notice of the scholarship on the status page at SFA (Hurray!), but still no written verification.

Anything from departmentals? Thanks.

My D recieved award letter friday the 13th,lol is that bad luck or what! Any way we were alittle no alot disapointed with the package. D is in-state!
