Financial Aid Online Check?

Is this a standard email or a good sign? I did fill out a part of the Fafsa wrong by accident

Funny, I got one too and I told my dad yesterday that it wasn’t necessary to send the tax returns to Columbia, believing I was already rejected as implied by the admissions office. I actually got 2 emails today, one at 4 and another at ~6:30 (both the same).

I doubt it has any other meaning than for financial aid.

why would you think the admissions office rejected you? how did they imply that

I think my daughter got 2 emails also. Just a glitch, and I’m sure sent to everyone.

Received by my daughter as well, just seems to be telling us that we still need to submit our tax return and w-2, probably triggered by march 1 date.

States:

"Dear -----:

We are writing to update you on your financial aid award. We are pleased to present the following financial aid award for your enrollment in 2011-2012."

Do all of your letters say the same thing?

Don’t know what content of my daughter’s emails was but both had subject: Thank You: Columbia Financial Aid Application = Complete

Hmm. Seems everybody got a personalized email. Mine says something like please check online updates and send in missing items listed before Mar. 1
They do this for all applicants? Seems to me lots of works.

I got the same email as notakid! the email, i.e. the Thank You: Columbia Financial Aid Application = Complete

Seems likely to me they just send the appropriate email to every applicant. Don’t think there’s any significance to the sending.

I was surprised to get that email, but it’s so confusing.
We are writing to update you on your financial aid award. We are pleased to present the following financial aid award for your enrollment in 2011-2012.

We look forward to welcoming you back to campus in the Fall!
??? What?

I’ve been very confused about this, columbia apparently sent this to me thinking that I was a returning student. It talked about my tuition and expenses for 2011-2012, and went on to say that they expect to see me back in fall. Weird part is, they signified my name, address, and columbia id … I still haven’t filed the css thing, coz um sure now that I won’t get in, so no point in wasting money, but this has me really confused.

Those of you who got the financial aid AWARD letter: Did any of you apply to Columbia before, like last season? That may be a reason for the award letter…

Ok, just got an email from Columbia saying that it was a mistake.

What did you guys have as your parental contribution? Mine was 18k which would be fabulous if I got into Columbia haha.

My parental contribution was 0!! So they even sent applicants different statistics? I thought all the emails would read the same, just with different names and ids

The first email daughter received had a number for parental contribution that is the same as the EFC from her FAFSA, so they are not totally generic. She also received a second email stating that the first email was a mistake.

Mine says the EFC is ~$33,000, which is pretty similar to what my FAFSA form said as well.

Did anyone else get the 2 emails? I’m surprised that not more people have commented on this by now, especially when they supposedly sent that out to everyone?

My daughter got two identical emails saying application complete. Maybe those with the messed up year etc. got some real (tentative anyway) figures by accident.

Oh, ok. Do schools calculate the finaid award for each student regardless of whether they get admitted or not (and then actually send the award out to those admitted)? Or does the finaid info only go to the Finaid Office once admitted?
