Grcxx3: I toured Penn State this fall with my DD and we were not told this at the info session or the tour. I guess I had different reps than you?

I do have to add that I know, via CC, that PSU is not known to award much OOS FA.

The percentage of need met is not just reporting Penn State’s own funds. That percentage also includes Pell grants, Byrd grants (which are about to be eliminated nationwide), other federal grants, PHEAA grants, grants from states where oos states are from, etc.

Also, note that the average non-need grant is $3,300. The non-need grant provided to each Scheyers Honors student per year is $3,500. That infers that the main component of the merit money is the money provided to Scheyers students.

There is more detailed data on last year’s financial aid that is available if you google Penn State’s “common data set.”

For any applicants for next year, they should keep in mind that Pitt gives much more merit aid to out of state students than Penn State.

MDdad2012 - did you attend and Admissions info session too? It was stated in that meeting and then by the students on our tour. But, the comment by the students might have resulted from a specific question - I just don’t recall.

What/how is the Lighthouse Trustee Scholarship awarded?
The above adds up to about $10K…what is the source for the other $10K you received from PSU?

The rest was from federal grants, work study, etc. The Lighthouse is somehow connected to the honors college, but other than that I have no idea.

Scholarships are found within the different departments websites. I suppose those students who are very interested in PSU would be all over these sites and find their way to the scholarships and applications if needed.

^^^
OOS especially? While that is usually true at most state supported universities, I think PSU provides equally “horrible” aid to both in-state and OOS students. It is what it is. Fortunately there are more affordable alternatives both in PA and out…
