My son just received his financial aid package today - I am happy with it. It's not great but it's better than I expected. He is receiving a University Scholarship(nice amount) - possible due to his strong academic record and the fact that he was named a Notre Dame Scholar. This package makes his acceptance a lot more of a reality now! :)

If it's not prying into personal matters (I would understand if it is), could you share some details for the edification of the rest of us waiting for this news? EFC? Package details? Son's academic stats? As a ND Scholar, he must have around 1500+ SAT/33+ ACT, 4.4 weighted? How in the world does a normal family pay 50K/yr.?

I got mine today as well.
Everyone receives a "University Scholarship" that's what they call the needs based aid. I think I read somewhere the ND scholar helps boost that a bit though.

That's right - I momentarily forgot that the University Scholarship was need based - my fault. My son's package consisted of the scholarship(which made up more than half of the package), work study and loans. With our EFC, it doesn't quite cover the full tuition (it will be a stretch), but I believe that we will be able to make it work.
Regarding the Notre Dame Scholar question -
SATs = 1540 w/writing=2230
ACT = 34
GPA = 4.61 (w) 3.87(uw)
Rank = Top 5%

i got boned over and i'm an nd scholar :(

can you share any details duke?

Heycow, was your son's scholarship sponsored by a donor? My d received a "university scholarship" that was sponsored and I'm wondering if everyone's scholarship is similar. She was named a ND Scholar as well. We were very pleased with our package and found ND to be the most generous. As a matter of fact, I was so surprised, I called to check that they had the right numbers! I think I gave financial aid a chuckle!!

NYmama -

On the scholarship information release form, it mentions authorizing information in my son's financial aid or academic records with his scholarship donor. It also mentions writing a letter of appreciation to his scholarship donor annually - so I guess that means that it is a sponsored scholarship but it appears that all University Scholarships are sponsored.

Would it make any difference to have two students from one family at Notre Dame? My sibling is there and I was accepted a Notre Dame Scholar as well. However, my parents will not be able to pay for both of us. My parents got no help for my sibling.

Sabrina1 -

My son's package was based on two kids attending college next year - so I believe that you should be receiving some type of financial aid from the school.

Sabrina, it all depends on your EFC. If your family has 2 kids attending, but your EFC is higher than the costs of paying 2 sets of tuitions, you likely won't get any aid, ND scholar or not.

Wow, NYMama, you called the FA office to see if they made a mistake in your favor? Bless your heart! I'll bet there are a lot of parents out there who would like to be able to make that call!

Some of the comments on this thread are encouraging. It does not sound like ND is an "admit-deny" school with the attitude of, "You should be honored we are willing to have you, so pay up," but rather, their statements of meeting 100% of demonstrated need are not mere rhetoric. Still, defining "demonstrated need" is the rub. For those who have received your FA letter, how did they do that for you? How did your "need" compare to your EFC? What level of sacrifice does ND expect? Are home equity and retirement savings factored into your assets? If so, to what extent? Is high school tuition for siblings factored into your available income? And do they use the just-above-poverty-level living allowance in the FAFSA federal methodology? Or something more realistic?

I got 3k in loans and 3k in work money. That = 0 dollars total aid! Yay! :'(

my demonstrated need for ND was a couple thousand dollars more than what the FAFSA said my need was, so that was nice. im not sure about the home equity and retirement savings and stuff, but i know i've heard that private school tuition is factored in.

Thanks. My whole questionis basically -- is there a little more consideration if you have a sibling at Notre Dame, not necessaily just another private school?

Anyone else heard about finaid from ND? We're still waiting, after being selected for verification.

^^^ Also waiting after verification.

ok so we are suppose to have our confirmation card by may 1st but i still dont know what financial aid package i am to receive. has anyone else (RD) received theirs yet?

nope .

I am still waiting (patiently) for my package after being asked for verification.
