Financial Aid Per Semester - Is my math right?

https://www.everettcc.edu/students/financial/financial-aid/costs lists the academic year (nine months, three quarters) cost of attendance for WA residents living with parents:

4500 tuition and fees
1050 books
3455 rent, food, and utilities
1410 transportation
1810 personal

12225 total

Obviously, your actual costs for everything except the tuition and fees can vary considerably (and tuition and fees do vary by number of credits). But if the numbers are accurate, your cost per quarter should be approximately $4,075, including $1,500 tuition and fees and about $350 books.

If you are not a WA resident, the tuition and fees will be larger.

The tuition and fee table for WA and non-WA residents by number of credits is at https://www.everettcc.edu/enrollment/tuition/tuition-rates

@ucbalumnus , so would i take the $7,709 and divide it by 3, and then that would be what i get per quarter?

@ucbalumnus It doesn’t sound like OP has any financial aid if there are no loans, grants or scholarships.

@hrrenee No do not assume that you will be recieving money unless it specifically says that you are recieving money.

@ucbalumnus If you look at my profile picture, its a picture of my shopping sheet. can you take a look at that?

@hrrenee I looked at your shopping sheet. You did not receive any financial aid. It says that your net cost is 20,000. I am very sorry. Maybe the FASFA issues?

@gearmom What do you mean i wont be receiving financial aid. They told me i would receive financial aid.

@ucbalumnus posted a cost of attendance for the year of $12225. How come you think your cost will be $20,000?

What is your parent income? It’s very possible you don’t qualify for need based aid at all…that would be dependent on your parent annual income.

In addition, this is a community college…and they are not obligated to give you grant money.

The only “guaranteed” aid you will get by completing a FAFSA is the $5500 for the YEAR Direct Loan. You would get 1/3 of that each quarter.

How much can your parents pay for you to attend this college?

I only have my mother, and her income is $40k a year. She can barely afford to pay our rent bills, she will not be able to afford anything for me for college. My financial aid documents are currently under professional review, is there a chance thats’ why my financial aid money isnt showing?

I don’t have any grandparents, as my mothers parents both died when she was 15. My father is out of the picture, and my mom doesnt have any blood family, except for a couple aunts and uncles in holland. So i do not have anyone to look to for resources.

You said your file is being verified. That is probably why you don’t have any financial aid listed. It looks like your EFC is 1533, so if it stays the same, you will get a Pell Grant. If your school participates in the federal loan program, you will also be offered loans. You may or may not receive institutional grants -there is no way to know until your aid is completed, which should happen once verification is completed.

That said, it can happen that a school could miss packaging your aid after completing verification, so make sure to get hold of someone in the aid office who can answer all of your questions. You will probably need to wait until after the holiday weekend.

That makes a ton of sense! i guess i misunderstood and thought the costs the shopping list listed was to be given to me lol. So when the verification is listed, ill know what im getting?

You said they didn;t respond to emails. Have you called?

I am not a fan of the shopping sheet, which schools are required to provide. I think it’s confusing. I use the newest version, which is even more confusing (I have to answer a lot of questions about what it really means).

What bothers me is that your school sent an award notification with no aid. I would not send a notification if I hadn’t yet determined awards. That is why I think it’s important for you to make sure you don’t somehow slip through the cracks. It can happen, and schools want you to ask if things don’t seem quite right.

Thank all of you so much. I was informed by google it would take 10-15 days for reviewing of my account and then ill know of my financial award? Im definitely going to go down to the office on thursday when they are open and get some answers. Can anyone give me an estimate of how much aid ill be getting?

@hrrenee You cannot assume that they will be providing 20k a year in aid. Or they they will be handing over money for your room and board to pay your mother. You can get a Federal loan like every freshman of $5500. I think the maximum Pell grant is 6k. That would be 12 k. I don’t know why your shopping sheet says that your tuition is 12k. Aren’t you a WA resident?

@hrrenee You should have a job or two jobs now to save as much as you can. Your financial aid package will include loans and you should not take them if you do not have to. Wait until verification and we’ll hope for the best.

Wait, so now im confused. Is financial aid paying for my tution (cost of classes and etc) or will i have to use the 12K total i get (if i get it) to pay for the cost of classes? I was led under the impression that financial aid would pay for my tution (cost of classes) and then i would get a small allowance to pay for books, transpo, housing and supplies. Is this wrong?

@ucbalumnus Why would her shopping sheet have 12k for tuition?

@hrrenee You certainly might have extra after tuition is paid for for books. etc. Are you instate for Washington? That tuition fee seems crazy high.

Ive been living in Washington state since i was 2-3. Im not quite sure what instate means in that context, but i hope that answers your question lol. So does financial aid cover cost of classes? Or will i have to pay for that out of the 12k i get per year?
