This evening I received a phone call from the USC Financial Aid Department. It was a man on the phone and he said he was with a panel of 5 others and they wanted to ask me a few questions. I have yet to receive an acceptance letter to USC but realistically, why would they be considering me for financial aid if they didn't know I would be accepted? They commented on how impressive my application was (my stats aren't phenomenal, however) and said at the end how impressed they were with the interview.

Has this happened to any body else? What could this mean regarding my admission to USC? Thanks for any feedback.

You may have misunderstood the call. It was likely from a scholarship panel, not financial aid. Alumni scholarships, Town and Gown, the Topping student aid fund - are some of the scholarships that may interview applicants (and there are more). There is no interview for financial aid unless they have questions about your financial situation.

The reason they “consider” applicants for financial aid is because the applicants submitted a FAFSA and a CSS/Profile. Applicants who do not submit those forms do not receive need-based aid.

There is no interview for financial aid, and “stats” are not considered. The information on the FAFSA and CSS/Profile are evaluated and a package is put together based on an accepted student’s USC-determined need. A panel is not involved.

Thank you for your detailed response. I suppose I was so excited to receive a phone call from USC that I misheard what exactly they said they were calling about. I heard “University of Southern California” and nothing more. Do you believe this has any bearing on whether or not I am admitted?

Well… it would help if you knew who called you. I can see how exciting it would be to get such a call. Did you apply to the Norman Topping Student Aid Fund, Town and Gown or your area’s Alumni scholarships?

I don’t know if indicates any official bearing on whether you have been admitted, but in general a panel of five saying you are impressive sounds like a positive sign!
