Hello everybody, I was looking for a web-site like this since long time... then I finally found this. I can ensure you that your web-site is VERY VERY Interesting !!! I found many things I have been looking for so long without finding any answers on the Web.

Thank you for this Web Site.

--

My concern is : I'm a international student from Central Africa, I did registration in Johnson and Wales University (www.jwu.edu), and I have been
admitted. They issued me a Presidential scholarship of $5000, and they told that that's the maxumum, and I trust them about that.

My university sent me the package of admission in my country via DHL, but the problem is I have to pay an amount of $21000 when I arrive there before attending the univ, as tuition is 26000 minus $5000 of presidential scholarship.

I could begin the process of F1 Visa to the embassy but I am afraid once I arrive in USA I will be obliged to pay the rest of the money ($21000).

My real problem is I DON'T HAVE MONEY to pay.

but they still waiting for me till today.

My question is : Is there anything I can do to support the rest of the money, like to contact a Scholarship Organization that support students for Fanancial AID.

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to secure a loan in the United States. It is equally unlikely that you will be able to get $21,000 in scholarships before college begins.

In addition to tuition, you will need to have funds for housing, and board, fees, health insurance, books and supplies…and personal expenses. You don’t need $21,000 more…more like $35,000 more.

ETA…here are the costs to attend Johnson and Wales. Adding just tuition, room and board, it’s over $38,000 a year.

UNDERGRADUATE
Per year$28,239
Orientation Fee$300

*First year only
English as a Second Language
Providence, North Miami Campuses ONLY.

Per year$6,394

Room and Board
Housing tiers vary by campus. These numbers represent the range of available options. Not all halls include a meal plan — check your campus catalog for details.

Per year$9,027-$12,480

Student Health Insurance Plan
SHIP Annual fee$1,326

There are no organizations that I have heard of that give scholarships to international students, especially in those amounts. Sometimes there are organizations of Russian Americans, for instance, that award a few thousand dollars to Russian students to help them come and study here. It is unlikely there is such an organization for a small African country.

The international students that don’t have money focus on colleges that give money. Those are usually the hardest universities to get into here so they only accept very highest performing students. J & W doesn’t have those kinds of funds to give. I’m afraid that if you don’t have the money you will have to decline the acceptance.

You should contact EducationUSA for your country or the nearest country for help with your future applications and discuss the aid situation.

There is no general Scholarship office for international students. Most of the money you receive will come from the university that has admitted you. If that is what you received ($5000), that’s probably the only amount you will get.

Scholarships and loans for American colleges and universities are generally reserved for US citizens, and even the US students don’t get much help. Money has to be spread out to all of the students who qualify, and there are just too many students needing money.
Most people don’t want to pay those amounts for a university education, but there are not a lot of options. Good luck.

Please user ’ BrownParent ', you said " The international students that don’t have money focus on colleges that give money. Those are usually the hardest universities to get into here so they only accept very highest performing students. "

Can you give me a list of colleges that give money (high free tuition) to international students???

I intend to decline JWU acceptance, and then focus on the others suitable Univ. for international student.

Can you give me a list of colleges that give money (high free tuition) to international students???

I think you should look for similar threads on that. And go to the College Search or International forum and post your ‘stats’ for help in picking the bracket that you are a candidate for.

Why did you pick JW? I only know that for the culinary and management programs.

Also, keep in mind that except for SIX colleges that give full, guaranteed aid to international students…all but six WILL consider your ability to pay for the college when they review your application for admission.

Seriously GOOD LUCK! The acceptance rates at those schools hovers near 10%. Speculation is that international student acceptance rates are even lower. These are highly competitive schools. Their generous need based aid won’t do you any good unless you are accepted.

I DO hope you find a college that is affordable. My daughter was a PC volunteer in central Africa, and the higher education options are limited.

Oh brother. There are hundreds of colleges that have software engineering as a major. To be honest. JW is about the last I would think of for this. Plus they don’t have particularly generous financial aid options either need based or merit based…as you found out.

No “fees for registration”? What does THAT mean?

Free…there are a bunch of other schools that meet full need for international students…guaranteed. But the rest will consider your ability to pay when you apply for admission.

No “fees for registration”? means fee-waiver for application.

like I said, I was selecting the colleges by using a US Magazine, and I found out that JWU offers fee-waiver when you apply online and you have to pay the application fee when you use paper.

Yes, you’re right, I noticed they really don’t have particularly generous financial aid.

Now, I focus on the list of SIX univ. you gave me.

NO…don’t JUST focus on those six schools! Focus on ANY school that has the potential to give you either significant need based aid (there are at least 60 that guarantee to meet full need), or merit aid if your stats are sufficiently high.

Those schools, that meet full need…all of them…are competitive for admissions. Some are VERY competitive for admissions.

Do you have TIPPY TOP SAT scores and a superlative GPA? Do you have outstanding letters of reference?

If you have these things, you COULD get merit aid elsewhere…

If you are willing to post your GPA and SAT scores, perhaps folks could give you some suggestions.
