Financial Aid plus ROTC

Hello, I got my financial aid from Notre Dame and they offered me a university scholarship for 33,000.00 and a Provost's Scholarship for 2,500. However, they said that their offer may change based on any private scholarships that I receive. Do ROTC scholarships count as a private scholarship and if so how much could I expect my offer to be reduced? I was offered a type 2 ROTC scholarship for 18,000 per year. Also, since their financial aid offer was just for my freshman year does anybody know how much that offer changes year to year?

The way they explained it to us was that you look at the “Student Self-Help” portion of your FA offer (work-study, student loans) and see what that amount totals. You can apply outside scholarships to that amount up to the self-help total. If you have scholarship $ beyond the self help total that starts to reduce your university scholarship and/or provost scholarship dollar for dollar up to the amount of your leftover scholarship $. I assume this is how it would work for you as well but I don’t know if they treat ROTC differently. Additionally, my understanding was that first they apply scholarship $ to need-based loans (Perkins, Subs. Stafford) then work-study, then Unsub Stafford.

HTH!

I think that there is possible that your ROTC scholarship will not have much of a negative effect on what Notre Dame offered you.

HOWEVER, you really need to talk to Notre Dame about the details.

If you are serious about a military career, and if ND is really restrictive about their own scholarships then you might have a tough choice. You might even need to choose a different college, especially if you cannot otherwise afford ND. For what it is worth, remember that your type 2 scholarship is good at almost any college which has AFROTC. Hopefully, ND will work out, but you only have about a week to sort all this out. You need to post your deposit by May 1st – a week from tomorrow. Call or email Notre Dame today!

It might be too late, but two other Catholic universities will give you full tuition supplements to your AFROTC type 2 scholarship. Those two are University of Portland (in Oregon) and University of St. Thomas (in Minnesota). Take a look here:

and
<a href=“Department of Aerospace Studies | College of Arts and Sciences | University of St. Thomas”>http://www.stthomas.edu/afrotc/scholarship/

Did you know that the University of Portland is a sister school of Notre Dame? It is run by the same religious brothers, the Congregation of the Holy Cross.

AnnikaH - Thanks for the help it would make sense if they did it that way but hopefully they’ll change it for Rotc

NROTCgrad - Thanks, I already sent an email to their financial aid department so hopefully I’ll hear back soon. I do have several other colleges that I’ve been accepted to and that I’m considering (V Tech and UVA). I just want to see what the total cost will be before I make my decision.

Yep, you gotta see “total cost” before making a decision. =D>

Also, you probably already know this, but remember that if you go to VT with an ROTC scholarship then you are required to participate in the Corps of Cadets, including wearing your uniform every day, and living in the Corps dorms. This is sort of like going to one of the military academies. Great if that is what you want. Just a friendly reminder.

@1cantdecide‌ - What was the final answer from the Financial Aid Department re: the ROTC scholarship in conjunction with the University’s financial aid offer?
