Impact of ROTC Scholarship on Other Aid

I realize this topic probably needs to go on the scholarship threat, but I thought someone might know and could comment on this thread. If my ds gets a 4yr type 2 or 7 ROTC scholarship and if that scholarship doesn’t cover the entire tuition, will the school make up the difference with other merit or need based aid? ds is a junior and considering ROTC scholarships next year as a means to pay for a very good private school. He is also considering the AFA (dad is a grad). He has very good stats: 1430 SAT, 4.7 weighted GPA, lots of AP classes, ECs, soccer, church, etc. Let’s assume he gets accepted to Duke and also gets a ROTC scholarship, unless he scores a Type I ROTC scholarship, it won’t pay for it all correct? How does one peddle a ROTC scholarship around to the different schools? Is a ROTC scholarship an effective bargaining tool for additional aid? Thanks.

No - AFROTC scholarships that do not cover the entire tuition for a school are not bargaining chips. Most schools don't do anything for scholarship ROTC cadets. SOME have an additional bonus, i.e. RPI pays for the cadet's room and board, but most schools offer no other aid based solely on the AFROTC scholarship, i.e. Notre Dame doesn't give you anything special. HOWEVER, if your ds is a VERY competitive candidate, then he MAY be awarded merit money - otherwise it will be need based aid. You should probably look at the federal financial aid programs for next year, and do it EARLY!! On other thing to consider is that you can convert some of the scholarships into a shorter time frame but you get more money, or try reapplying once your ds is in the program

The bottom line is that you can't count on anything, whether that is your ds continuing in ROTC in order to maintain scholarship status, continuing to be academically qualified, etc. The ROTC papers tell you to consider your own ability to pay for the college that you choose when deciding where to go. As far as moving the scholarship around, you are restricted to a major inside a certain group. I got a Type 1 scholarship because I am in the Engineering group. I have to go to a school that offers one of those engineering majors and I must be a student in that major... I think it's more wide open in the liberal arts majors, but it is much more competitive for the type 1 scholarships there since most of the tier 1 and 2 majors get those.

Hope that helps.
