I just got an email from Rice yesterday (I was accepted) saying that they didn't have all my financial aid documents, so I logged in and saw that I had to register for selective service. I didn't know that I had to do this to apply for financial aid, and I'm still 17, so I hadn't done it yet. I did yesterday, though, and subsequently emailed Rice saying so. They still haven't responded, though. Is there something else that I have to do, perhaps, a form that I have to send them? I feel like this is going to negatively impact how much $ they give me or something.

It won’t. :)

I called Rice today and they told me to send them the confirmation page from selective service to complete my finaid application. So I went to the SS website and tried to check my registration, and it said that you have to be within a month of your eighteenth birthday (even though I already registered this Sunday). So I tried to re-register in an attempt to get some sort of page to send them, and it said that my information is already on file and that I will automatically be registered when my birthday comes.
What am I supposed to do?! Is there anyone else who isn’t 18 yet and is in a similar situation?

Couldn’t you print out the page that says that your information is already on file? Call the financial aid office again and ask them what you just asked here. They’ll help you figure out what to do.

(I’m Jimmy’s mom)
The Selective Service registration was the only thing shown lacking on his Esther page. He registered with SS last week; he won’t turn 18 til Sept.
I called Rice this afternoon. They told me that the SS showing up on Esther would not keep him from getting his package. It would have an effect on money disbursement IF he turned 18 and hadn’t registered yet.
Anyway, the reason nothing else is showing up for us is because our package has not been put together yet. We were late getting our taxes done and there was an issue with our Fafsa.
They were super nice in the FA office. Perhaps you should call to check on your status? His wasn’t showing a problem with Fafsa because they had our original Fafsa (with estimates), but it helped that I called. Now everything is corrected, and we shouldn’t have to wait too much longer.

Everything worked out regarding the SS requirement, and my finaid information showed up on Esther. I’ll basically have to pay so little the first year that I won’t have any debt. However, I have the following questions: 1. Can I expect Rice to make similar offers all four years? 2. Why does it say on Esther that all of the offers (Pell Grant etc.) are accepted? It was like this when I logged in, and I don’t want to accept one of the parts (work-study).

For my son’s, the Rice Grant and the WorkStudy were automatically marked as accepted and the loan wasn’t. I think the way you reject a work study is by not bothering to get a job.?

^^^ yeah I believe thats how it works

the money is there for you but if you decide not to apply for a job you just wont get it

We have had 6 years of need-based financial aid from Rice, (two different kids), and our financial aid has been wonderful and approx. the same every year. Loans for students in our income level are now capped at $10,000 per student (for the entire 4 years! :)), though that wasn’t the case w/ DS. But, since Rice uses outside scholarships to offset student loans, DS will graduate w/ less than $8000 in loans. DD graduated with no loans (she had some merit aid from Rice, and her FA packet had no loans or workstudy.) You can be confident that your financial aid will continue at the same level, given similar income. (If you start making BUCKETS of money, then of course, your FA will decrease ;))
