Financial Aid Question

Hello. I am in financial aid dilemma with Uchicago. I really would like to attend, but the aid they gave me wasn't what I expected.

I live with a single mother and my brother. My mom makes ~16,000 per year and we own our home. My dad pays child support.

My dad makes much more than my mom, but I am not sure how much he makes. He is not willing to pay for my college at all since he has two sons "of his own" (my half-brothers). *Can I call the Financial aid office? *

This is the aid they gave me:
University of Chicago Grant: 14500
Subsidized Direct Stafford Loan: 3500
Unsubsidized Stafford Loan: 2000
Perkins: 1725

I'm assuming my dad makes somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 based on the aid they gave me. By the time I graduate, I'll have to take out $200,000 in loans, which seems a bit ridiculous.

Anybody familiar with financial aid situations?

Unfortunately, there’s very little you can do. You can try and call, but I doubt you will get a favorable answer.

Polyosophy, post this in the financial aid forum. There are posters there who are very knowledgeable about financial aid and will more likely be able to help. I would think there is some kind of form that your father can fill out to indicate that he would no longer contribute at all to your education and that his income should therefore not be considered…

Edit: Sorry, but it seems that there is no easy way :(:

Either write a formal letter to or schedule a meeting with the financial aid office explaining everything you explained here, but only after you get your finalized package in the spring.
