Financial Aid Questions

So I will be a sophomore transfer next fall in LSA, and I based on my estimated award notice said that I will be getting some Michigan grants and I also might get some transfer scholarships, so I have a couple questions:

  1. Has anyone, incoming freshman or transfers, gotten their actual financial award yet, I still have to turn in the household questionnaire.
1a) How many documents did they ask you to send in after your FAFSA and CSS?
1b) How accurate is the estimated award notice?
  2. If I transfer into the college of Engineering in the winter semester, how will that affect my financial aid since their tuition is a bit higher? Would they review and change anything if needed?
  3. Do they give you all of the scholarships/grants/awards at once, at the beginning of the school year? Or do they give you your awards per semester.
  4. Does anyone know when they will announce if you received a scholarship/award or not?
  1. FA awards are being released. You should get yours shortly after being admitted PROVIDED you have submitted ALL your required information.
  2. Which documents you must submit will depend on whether you are selected for verification. Full information is on the FA website.
  3. The estimated award notice should be very accurate unless you have significant assets or capital gains.
  4. Your FA is based on your Cost of Attendance. So COE students aid would be based on a higher tuition figure.
  5. FA is awarded annually but released on a semester basis.

If they ask for documents, get them in…ASAP. Make sure they are correct, signed and relieved.

My daughter is a Junior. This year we had to turn in a FAFSA, a Tax Return Transcript, and a household questionnaire.

The estimated award notice accuracy…our experience has been that aid will not go down, but it might go up with revised award letters. In the past, we’ve gotten a couple of revised award letters with the final one coming in June or July.

My kiddo got news about her departmental scholarship in April when she was a Freshman.

Financial aid will work to accommodate you if you transfer. Let them know ASAP, though.

Aid is given per semester but awarded yearly.

@MaryGJ When your daughter received her departmental scholarship in April as a Freshman, was that April of her senior year of high school for her Freshman year or did she get in April of her Freshman year? And if she heard in April while still in high school, was it before or after she committed to attending? I’m curious as to whether a student might be more or less likely to hear positive scholarship news after they’ve paid deposit to attend.

Does anyone else have experience with not hearing about departmental/college (in particular LSA) merit scholarships until April? And if so, did you hear before or after you accepted their offer of admission?
