So I am an international who has just been placed on the financial aid waiting list. They write in the email that my application impresses them, but since Haverford commits to meet the full demonstrated financial need of all admitted applicants, they have to limit the number of international students. If another accepeted international declines the admission offer, then they can have fund for me.

What should I do now? Should I write a short essay showing my interest in Haverford? Haverford is definitely one of my first choices, so I would do everything I can to get in.

Also, any international knows the average contribution?

Oh my gosh this is my biggest fear! If my top choice school had such a financial aid waitlist I’d write to them and tell them that I’d attend without any aid. But that’s me; do what you possibly can to secure that spot. Best wishes!

Btw, do you live overseas or in the States? I’m applying as an international applicant but I live in the US right now, wonder if they treat me as domestic when it comes to notification…

I live in Vietnam. Yes, I wish I would contribute more but the contribution I reported when submitting the application is probably the maximum amount my family can pay…

Many top liberal arts colleges like Haverford use the process you are in to make financial aid awards to the internationals. They offer the money to the top of the list first - so even though you must be very qualified to get the letter you did, there are probably a few people ahead of you. Have patience, I bet you will have a clearer answer in the coming weeks. Check with admissions if you don’t hear something by the time of any commitment deadlines.

Since you live in the US, your decision will arrive through the mail. For everything else, you’re treated as an international.

I happen to know of an international student from Vietnam who was one of the accepted students with financial aid. That was a year or two ago. PM me for more details.
