Financial Aid

We were also told aid is released tomorrow. I need a lot of money to make this a viable choice, since SUNY Albany made is so its only 4k a year. I’d MUCH rather go to UVM though.

Well, it’s March 31st … still nothing :-(

radannie…it does look like the calculator on UVM’s site specifically relates to UVM. It said we could expect about 23K in grants and scholarships (from UVM). That still leaves a good chunk of change for us, well above our EFC. Of course, they seem to consider the ParentPlus loan a form of fa…

OK - it’s 5:30 - still nothing. Anyone hear ANYTHING?

Nothing yet here…I keep checking periodically…

Ours is posted … exactly what the financial aid calculator predicted. Funny they include a Parent Plus loan as FA. JMU does the same thing. Who do they think they are fooling? Anyway, seems like UVM is out. My S received better packages from everyone else. Even UNH. Good luck to all!

Ours is way lower too… very disappointed that they think a PLUS loan is Financial Aid! Still about 10K too much! Darn… We’ll still have to think about this, but probably not going here. SAD SAD SAD We did get quite a bit… just not enough

Email came at 7:22. Exactly as predicted as nerbsmom said.

My D received the package last night as well…100% loans so that’s not going to cut it when she can go to UMASS Amherst at half the price in-state. Too bad as UVM was her first choice. Oh well, things work out the way they are supposed to. Good luck to everyone else!

Calculator was right on. 23K in grant plus merit. 24K in unsub and sub Fed Loan and Parent Plus Loan. That won’t be happening! I was surprised they didn’t package any work study - is that income-based? If they want to proudly tout their “public Ivy” label, they will need to work harder on FA.

I’m always interested in hearing more about what students received for aid, both OOS and in state…

I’m in state with clearly demonstrated financial need, and UVM is looking like it’s going to be my choice… yet they gave me no aid. Literally $0.

Granted, in state tuition is less expensive. That’s a lot of why it’s a likely choice for me. But $30,000 a year is still quite a burden.

I had heard that UVM was notorious for lacking in generosity, but this just seems a little unrealistic!

Here in NH, our state U is in trouble. Huge budget cuts just went through. Our daughter attends and is luckily graduating this year. Just received a letter from the school’s president asking for ideas/thoughts of how to deal with the cuts. I feel that what we paid at this school is the same, percentage-wise, as what UVM is asking of us. Our EFC is only 6K, but UVM expects my son to take the max is unsub and sub staffords, and is asking us to contriubute 21K/year on top of that. A bit too steep, unfortunately.

Well, I really wasn’t sure if I wanted to post or not because I don’t want to sound insensitive however we were pleasantly surprised with the FA package that UVM put together for my daughter. She is accepted into the Honors program so that probably helps. We also have a low EFC of 3557. They actually came through with more than the financial calculator estimated. She still has to take out the maximum allowed through loans as well as a parent PLUS loan on my part. However, all things considered it is reasonable. It is still almost 4 times higher than our EFC including the loans but it makes it the most cost effective option for us. Anyway you look at it, College Expenses are insane. And this is only my first child, I have 2 more to help as a single parent. I will never be able to stop working, UGH
Oh & @ Patrick, I hear you. My daughter was accepted to Penn State University Park, in state, but with the summer program, COA is $38,000, & they gave her $8,000.
PSU’s calculator estimate we would pay $18,000 , thats pretty far off the mark.

^^I think we probably got similar packages. 7K Pres. Scholarship and about 15 in grants. Which leaves us with about 4 times our EFC after Stafford Loans for son. He is particularly enamored with one of the more selective LAC’s he was accepted to. They emailed him his acceptance and he should be getting the fa package this week. The school costs about 5K more than UVM, but they are known for generous fa, so I am hoping it will be a go.

They actually gave D about $16,000 in grants and $15,000 scholarships…and the rest is $5500 in loans for her, $2000 FWS and I get ~ $9,000 in loans. She was also awarded a $36000 grants from American and then pretty much the same with stafford loans, FWS, and also Pell Loan, but American still ends up $4000 more overall. Extremely difficult decision. Still waiting on a couple more FA packages but these 2 are the best options. Emerson was a close third and she always wanted to go to school in Boston but I just cant justify the $5000 more a year and I am a little leery of the curriculum unless you are absolutely sure of your major. UVM would allow for more flexibility I believe. American is in DC and she is accepted to the SIS, plus it is only 2 hours from home. However, we really did LOVE UVM.
(this is really hard) I just want her to be happy and not saddled with any more debt than she has to be…

yeah I’m going to UVM in the fall and barely recieved any aid.
i got some stuff for being out of state but at this point I’m looking at just moving to vermont so it’s less expensive next year.

Please be aware that UVM is very, very selective on who they will let pay instate tutition. If you move to VT, just to get the instate rate, they will not allow it. Go to their web-site and read the information carefully. If you start as an out of state student, they are not likely to allow you to become instate. They actually will have a group investigate your residence status.
