Financial Aid

So I applied to Duke, but the Financial Aid tab never appeared when I logged on to their Admissions page. I was never contacted by the College Board about any financial aid requirements, but I did send them my FAFSA. Does this mean that I won't be receiving financial aid?

When did you check the website? Because my status check says it’s down for “routine maintenance”

Mine says that too. I checked it a week or so ago and i contacted the financial aid office to make sure that everything was okay, but I haven’t heard back. I figure that either admission decisions are coming out or stressed-out applicants are overloanding the website. I hope it is the former.

they may have the system down to get ready for decisions. I would call and speak to a Financial Aid counselor to make sure everything all docs are in order. good luck!

go to the duke financial aid website. they have instructions on how to apply there. You might have missed the deadlines; they were march 1, 2011. You should also call the admissions office. I know that Duke requires not only the FAFSA but also the CSS and IDOC component. good luck

All of my primary parent’s components + FAFSA were in on time.
My noncustodial sent in the CSS, but still hasn’t sent in the W2 or tax return.

you’re fine. you’ll still be considered for aid, but they won’t be able to guarantee that your aid package will be ready by the time that decisions come out. if your non-custodial is having problems doing the W2 forms then you could just send in the non-filer form for your noncustodial. look in to it.

My financial aid checklist says I haven’t sent in the parental federal tax return, but I know for a fact that I have and I have the certified mail receipt to prove it. Does this put my financial aid in jeopardy?

Don’t you send in tax returns through IDOC?

No, I let my dad do it and he sent copies through the mail. Is that like not allowed?

Pretty sure you’re supposed to send them in through IDOC.

@adswimfast,

you must submite your tax documents to collegeboard through the IDOC department/program. your financial aide is not at stake, but you won’t receive a package immediately. If you get in, Duke will contact you about completing your financial package. Sometimes Duke’s financial aid office will have you send/fax your documents straight to them if it’s after the deadline. Just know that your tax documents probably weren’t processed by Duke yet.

Called them today, they said it was just a mistake and that everything was okay and where it should be. I’m just really nervous about tomorrow now.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Now for decisions. :'[
Good Luck! :D

I know we only have like 1.5 hrs left, but did anyone receive a confirmation from Duke FinAid saying that their FA app was complete? Or that something was missing? I didn’t and I’m wondering if this means I’m not accepted. (They probably don’t even bother with the FA applications for students they won’t accept…)

^okay (back @swisschocolate, aka me) actually i got in, so for future reference, i guess not receiving any info on finaid status does not indicate rejection.

my FA app was complete though and i kept checking its status and i e-mailed once when something didn’t show up as complete.

The financial aid offered by Duke is very low compared to most other colleges. They don’t really have an open forum to discuss the situation. The Financial aid officer that I spoke to was not helpful at all, almost to the point “come here if you can afford it, otherwise go somewhere else”.

^It’s all relative. Financial aid at Duke is supposed to be better than that at Northwestern or JHU, but worse than Stanford/Harvard/Yale/etc. For me, Duke was quite nice…But it all varies depending on your particular circumstances.

But they say they meet 100% of need? I don’t really like my financial aid…my EFC according to FAFSA is 8,129 but Duke is saying that my EFC is almost 23,000. How is that fair?? I think I’m going to call them tomorrow.

I don’t know about you guys but I was accepted by both Princeton and Duke and my financial aid at Duke is wayyyyyy better.

I am an international student whose parents have an annual gross income of approximately $17 000 so anyone would suppose my EFC is 0.

But Princeton doesn’t. I am expected to pay $2 500 and the medical insurance which is $1 600 k. Not to mention that the $1 000 they considered I need for my plane tickets is not enough. I will probably need an extra $500.

Duke on the other hand does not mention that I have to pay for my insurance and my EFC is $1 800. They also allotted $2 400 for my plane tickets, which is almost double what they will actually cost so I will be able to save around $1 000 from here.

So $800 to pay at Duke versus some $4 600 to pay at Princeton? The result is that I will have to choose Duke if Princeton does not agree to pay for my insurance.

I am really disappointed with Princeton. I thought that with all the prestige and full-need and need-blind and blah blah AND THE HUGE endowment it has, money would not be a problem here. But I got better offers from Duke, Pomona, Dartmouth and, in fact, all the other colleges and universities that have accepted me.
