Financial Aid

Does anyone know when financial aid information is distributed and if it's sent home or you find it on the website and where?

Can’t find it on the website to save my life. Aggravating…

New students have to verify their “Lawful Presence” for UGA, and the website says that the easiest way to do so is to file FAFSA. We filed FAFSA in mid-February, and my S’s screen only began showing his lawful presence as verified this week. I assume that means that his aid situation has just been reviewed in the past couple days.

Yes dud all that long ago, there is a green check next to the lawful presence thing. Where is this aid screen you speak of? They’ve hidden it well.

*did that long ago (January)

Was able to get on the Oasis thing; financial aid info says thank you for applying for the 2010-2011 academic year…

Anyone know when they post the numbers?

You should get an early award notification sometime mid to late April. You should get an email sent to your UGA mail when it is posted to OASIS. The official award notice will not go out until June. Last year, the early award information was sent April 19.

I just got my early award information. They gave me $5500 but classified me as out of state however by the time I start at UGA, I will be instate. Will they lower my award? I have made it very clear to them that I will eventually be instate.

These are the residency requirements:
1.Students must first prove that they have established a primary domicile or permanent Georgia home at least twelve consecutive months immediately preceding the beginning of classes for the term to be considered for residency. Typically, the residency status of a dependent student is tied to the status of the parent(s), or in the case of divorce, the tax-dependent or majority support parent, so the parent(s) must show proof of domicile.
2.Invariably, students and/or parent(s) of dependent students also should provide documentation showing payment of Georgia state income tax, as this shows a tie to the state that proves financial support for the Georgia educational system.Mere property ownership in Georgia, by itself, is usually insufficient
3.The Office of Admissions also suggests that students include copies of any other documents showing their intent to be a Georgia resident, such as a Georgia driver’s license, car or voter registration, home ownership, full-time employment records, etc. Attending college in Georgia is not proof of intention to be a Georgia resident.

If you are classified as out of state during admission and want to change you will need to apply for in-state residency by completing a petition to be classified as in-state. It will not happen automatically.

When should I do that? After I have lived here 12 months or now?
I will have lived here for 12 consecutive months in July.

You can start the process now, especially if you will have been in GA 12 months before the first day of classes. Here is the petition for in-state residency that they have on their website. I had a lot of friends who had to go through the process with their parents moving to GA. It’s a pretty detailed form, but definitely worth the time and effort because it saves money:

Thank you!! Do you think this could hinder my $5500 FA?

It depends on where that $5500 came from, but if there is any affect that will be seen on that award it won’t come about until after you are officially classified as in-state.

Does a qualifying in-state student have to do anything for HOPE / Zell Miller other than file FAFSA?

Yes, if you think you qualify for the Zell Miller Scholarship, you need to make sure that your child’s SAT scores are sent to the Georgia Student Financial Aid Commission directly from the College Board. We did not know to do this last year and it created problems for us. Even though my D was in the honor’s program at UGA and UGA clearly had her SAT scores and her transcript showing her GPA (and thus showing that she was eligible for the Zell Miller), they could not apply her Scholarship because the people at the commission did not have her scores directly from the College Board. We were told that this caught alot of students off guard. They may have fixed the way scores get reported this year since last year was the 1st year that the scholarship was in existence and the bugs were being worked out up until school started, but you want to check on this.

D got her early award notification today. She can let go of her spot at UGA now without feeling bad. Even with Hope they came in more out of pocket (and more loans) than several of her out of state admits. I was really surprised.

gadad,
We filled out FAFSA and then when D decided on UGA submitted HOPE application through https://secure.gacollege411.org/

If you apply for HOPE through FAFSA, you need to re apply every year. If you file through GAcollege411, it is a one time deal. I had a debate about this with some other moms. I called UGA financial aid office to confirm and also looked on the UGA website. It was an easy process.

Good advice from Gibson1514…definitely apply through GAcollege411 that way you don’t have to worry about remembering to do it every year.

@CalmlyiChaotic - did your D qualify for Zell Miller as well? Zell Miller didn’t show up on Ds early award last year but was there by the final award.

is it too late to still hear from FAFSA with the deadline being tomorrow or have all financial aid notifications been sent out?

No - UGA Aid notifications go out in June.
