@AcceptableName Oh! Is the Estimate Bill only for one semester? (Or trimester?- I though uMich ran on trimesters). It would make sense if the other tab was full year and the first tab showed the cost for half a year.
@NICE8x Yes, one is only for a semester while the other is the full year.Well, that’s what it looks like.
University of Michigan has a regular semester system. The two “regular” terms that are covered by annual tuition are called Fall and Winter. There are two optional terms – spring and summer – that cost extra.
Financial aid award is up!
Eventually you will get a document entitled “Financial Aid Award Notice – Official”. On it your financial aid award will be summarized – grants, loans, work study. Last year they came out around 20 March.
Welp…no grants or scholarships, all loans… Anyone else OOS do better???
@NICE8x same lol. Very disappointing, but I sort of expected as much
In-state, only loans for me here. I expected this, but it proves that their NPC has issues. When I used it it projected $20,000 in aid, which I knew had to be wrong.
Why didn’t my SSN match with the SSN database? I’m 100000% sure it’s my SSN
Son OOS and received $22K in grants, $14K in loans and work study (no scholarships). I think he got the grant money because we’ll have 3 kids in college when he goes. We refuse to take out loans or have son do work study. He’ll have to wait to hear about outside scholarships.
MIchigan would never give an OOS student all grants, no loans. $14k in loans for one year? I am curious about how those stacked up. I assume $5,500 in a subsidized Stafford. What’s the rest?
What’s wrong with work/study? Any FA package of this amount is going to include it. Any, BTW, he doesn’t HAVE to do it. He just won’t get the money if he doesn’t get a job.
@JGCStation You are sooo lucky you received grants! That’s an amazing FA package. I don’t think you will be able to find any school that will not include at least SOME loans in a FA package.
@Brantly His package seems identical to mine. I think the $14k he’s talking about is composed of a $5500 Stafford Loan, a $5500 Federal Direct Loan (I think mine was $3500 Subsidized $2000 unsubsidized. All of those are the maximum allowed for a freshman) and $3,000 Federal Work-Study.
FWIW I got that package as an only child OOS, so it’s not entirely because of having other children in college unless your household income is higher than mine so you expected less.
@JGCStation I know it leaves a lot unmet but I don’t see why you’re so opposed to work-study. I can understand not wanting the loan burden but what’s wrong with working through college?
Overall the Michigan Grant exceeded my NPC estimate by $1000, but I may have just been using some incorrect data. It still leaves a lot to be desired, but we’ll see how scholarships and admission to other schools go. I like Michigan, but if some of the privates I’m waiting on take me with a good aid package it’ll be hard to justify taking the burden.
My FA award says $9k in grants, $3k in work study, and almost $14k in loans. Assuming I used the loans and the WS, my cost would be $32k per year. BUT I got a merit scholarship from the School of Nursing giving me full tuition for my freshman year… can anyone help clarify this please?? Why would they be giving me all this money (even without loans, it’s still $12k), when I only need to pay $13k in total next year anyway?
Definitely got an amazing aid package for an OOS student, probably bc of my low EFC: grants and the Tappan Scholarship up to the full $57K cost of attendance. Great to have Mich as a viable option!
@canunot Is the Tappan Scholarship something you have to apply for?
No I didn’t apply for it (all I know is that it’s for non-Michigan resident students).
@canunot Did you apply EA?
@brantly I was not complaining. Michigan gave son WAY more than we were even expecting. A poster asked about other OOS financial aid packages, and I was simply stating what son was offered. When I stated that we refuse to take out loans, it wasn’t anything again Mich; it’s just a personal philosophy my husband and I have adopted regarding graduating our children from college without debt. Son won’t do workstudy because he is the type of student that needs every second of his waking hours to complete his work. He’s a very bright, slow worker. I know son doesn’t HAVE to do workstudy. Loans are Direct (subsidized and unsubsidized) & Perkins.
but what’s wrong with working through college? @CautiousOptimist - There is absolutely nothing wrong with workstudy. As I told someone before, my son CAN’T do workstudy. He’s the type of student that needs every second on his waking hours to complete his work. He is a very bright…VERY slow worker.
