Financial Aid

It looks like Case doesn't make any merit awards until you submit your FAFSA...or maybe that's just the case with my son. Has anyone recv'd merit awards in the EA phase?

Also, I get the feeling that Case is rather stingy with aid...yes?

Merit award should have been included in your (EA) acceptance letter...at least it was for me and bunch of others.
And I also heard that Case is actually really good with aids...

I believe merit aid is most only awarded with your EA letter/admissions letter. You file the FAFSA for need based aid for Case. Case is known for good merit aid, I'm not sure about need-based...

Waiting for the need-based finaid package over here as well, didn't qualify for any merit.

If you had qualified for a merit award, it would have been in your acceptance letter. :(

Here is their financial info from 2005-2006

Need-based aid (first figure is freshmen, second is all undergrads):

Students who applied for financial aid 85% 69%
Those determined to have financial need 70% 60%
Students whose need was fully met (excluding PLUS or other private loans) 82% 88%
Avg. financial aid package (% awarded aid) $29,351 (70%) $28,931 (60%)
Avg. need-based scholarships or grants (% awarded aid) $20,783 (70%) $18,391 (60%)
Avg. self-help aid, such as work study or loans (% awarded aid) $6,616 (51%) $7,130 (48%)
Avg. need-based loan (excluding PLUS or other private loans) $4,836 $5,349
% need met (of those awarded need-based aid) 96% 92%

Non-need-based aid:

Avg. merit award (% awarded aid) $15,206 (24%) $11,852 (30%)
Avg. athletic scholarship (% awarded aid) N/A (N/A) N/A (N/A)

We rec'vd merit aid from RPI and WPI...but zippadeedoodah from Case...which will mean adios Cleveland.

Case does not require the fafsa for merit aid (unless something changed between EA and RD)

"Case does not require the FAFSA for merit aid..."

I'm not sure--I need to give their financial aid office a call.

In my DS's acceptance/merit award letter, it had a few lines to the effect that the official award would be from the financial aid office, etc. It sounded like I needed to file a FAFSA to claim the merit aid.

Dad'o'2, what is stated in the acceptance letter is the merit award even if you do not file a FAFSA. Ultimately the FA office is involved in distribution of all scholarships. You can apply for FA as well, but you are not required to.

There are some discrepancies between Case's numbers and those from USNews:

============================

From the USNews numbers (posted above by Weenie)

Avg. merit award (% awarded aid) $15,206 (24%) $11,852 (30%)

=====================

And from the Case Website

Enrolled first-year students receiving merit aid: 61% of the class
Average merit award: $18,590

============================

From the USNews numbers

Students who applied for financial aid 85% 69%
Those determined to have financial need 70% 60%
Avg. financial aid package (% awarded aid) $29,351 (70%) $28,931 (60%)

=====================

And from the Case Website

First-year students receiving aid: 93% of the class
Average financial aid package: $26,989

Thanks. I'll have to re-read the letter a couple more times.

I know that Carnegie Mellon has a merit scholarship (presidential) that is only available for those who qualify for little to no need-based aid, and they require a FAFSA for consideration. If awarded, you must submit all other forms.

I got no merit money from Case. Darn. I can't even consider them now. I might end up at Northeastern due to a better offer. Boston might be better anyway.

iamtim,
Did you just get your acceptance letter? Did you apply EA or RD?

My DS just got an email from Case that began, "You're in - now what?" We thought it must be a mistake because he applied RD and didn't even have confirmation all his stuff was received yet. So he checked his Case acct (or whatever it's called) and that listed all his application stuff was received and up top, it says "Congratulations. You've been admitted... Please look for your official letter of admission in the mail." Will this letter say if he gets a merit award or does he need to wait til April to hear?

haha i got the same e-mail today and activated my caseid, only to realize that i was accepted (i don't know why i didn't see this before). except i applied EA, so it's kinda weird that an RD applicant already found out. when do we find out about whether we've been accepted to the PPSP?

singinsweetie2290,
I don't know when Case gives out the PPSP interviews. I tend to be on a "need to know" system -meaning I'm the help. I only saw the email because I set up a separate email acct for college stuff that we both have access to & I check it to make sure emails are getting read regularly... I rechecked his app and saw he did NOT check off early admission. I think his got read because he applied to PPSP and they must have started those apps & do them all together. It's just nice they let him know now rather than waiting.
