BTW: I am from China…

I called and spoke to my financial aid officer and they are actually going back into committee on Friday.

Helvetica - You sound like a prime candidate to be talking to the FA office. Make sure you or your dad explain the situation. It would surprise me if you did not receive a positive response. Try to talk to the head of the office if possible. Have all your reasons and facts lined up prior to making the call.

^plumazul: I hope I didn’t give you the wrong impression (I was a bit rushed when I wrote that last post). I’m thrilled for you that you are such a strong candidate and that your offers are generous.

I feel strongly that you SHOULD negotiate with WashU if it’s your top choice. I know people who have very successfully negotiated for better merit aid by asking one school to match/come closer to another’s offer. Make sure you are comparing other comparable schools to their offer – it will give you more negotiating power. If you are not comfortable negotiating yourself, do you like the idea of asking one of your parents to do so? My son could NEVER negotiate a financial deal (at least not at age 17) in which he is emotionally involved. GOOD LUCK!

My D received a very nice merit scholarship from Brandeis and nothing from Wash U. Can someone tell me if they think we have a negotiating tool there?

How do you know about Brandeis yet?

gunther- My D had received an invitation from Brandeis back in October that if she applied before Dec 1st, she would have her decision by Feb 15 and the app fee would be waived, but totally non-binding. It was a great deal.

Does anybody have any thoughts about my prior post?

NJ Mom of 2- I would think not since Wash U and Brandeis are of different calibers. However, if you do try to use it as bargaining, let us know how it goes, since that will be my tactic if Brandeis gives me a big scholarship and if when Wash U reevaluates my package, they don’t give me enough money.

Gunther - Good luck to you - I hope you are rewarded as well!

Thank you. If you had any chance of need-based aid and didn’t get any, call; they can reevaluate.

NJ Mom of 2 - It is a possibility. I would certainly call the FA office and tell them that although WashU is the first choice, due to finances you have to consider the other offer. Be polite, telling them that you are in a real bind since you would prefer WashU. See what they say, it is certainly worth a shot. Have your entire conversation (presentation) thought out prior to making the call. Again, try to speak to the head of the FA office. Good luck.
