Financial Aid?

I feel you mmm, Does anyone know how much they give if you repeal?

^^How are so many people getting “Boston University grants” in the $20k-$40k range? Why is mine only like in the single thousands range?

I have an EFC of 1850 and got a grant for 37500. Combined with fed grants im covered for 47500 im pretty sure the amount in the grant depends on your qualifications, maybe eve on the expediencey with which you sent in required financial aid documents

I thought BU was actually relatively generous with their aid. Northeastern offered me like half of what BU is offering and univer of miami only offered me 41,000, including state grants.

I got 28,000 in grants and 39,000 total, no merit scholarships though. my efc is like 11,000 so im pretty happy with this, i’ll be able to work it out. im really surprised thats all they gave you! i always heard that BU gives pretty good financial aid…hmm, i guess it is possible that theyre having budget problems this year

With BU financial aid it seems like it’s about chance. Technically my need was met by fafsa standards (which is completely wrong because there’s no way my parents can give me 20,000 a year to pay for school) so BU was pretty generous. On the other hand, a lot of you guys are saying you got nothing. So BU finaid is neither bad or good, just a gamble.

I’m just gonna repost this site from bu.edu that might help some people understand why they might be in the situation they are in with financial aid. it might not explain ALL cases, but it could help:

[Boston University - Office of Financial Assistance - Applying for Financial Aid](http://www.bu.edu/finaid/apply/incoming_probability.html)

just click on it, then scroll down.

Do people that get off the wait list get offered financial aid?

it’s just infuriating. With a 3.72 and a 2070 I would have expected to get SOME merit aid. SOME kind of scholarship. I wanted BU more than anything- but I don’t know if it’s worth 100k of debt, seeing as I’ll leave NEU after coop/scholarships with barely 20k of debt.
Anyone have any idea about negotiating finaid? Because I did not recieve grants or scholarships (my efc is about 13k less than the cost of BU, but i realistically don’t have that kind of money for school…), can I ask for them? I want merit stuff, not loans. I don’t even count loans as aid.

I got 10k a year (Dean’s scholarship) and 5500 or so in loans. FAFSA gave me nothing at all, as my dad makes a considerable amount of money. 42k a year is still too expensive of a check for me to go to this school. Guess I’m going to McGill!

i have a 3.76 and i didnt receive merit aid either.
any suggestions would be so helpful.

How has everyone been able to check their financial aid? I still have not been able to check my decision as the link to sign into BU account still has that heavy volume error.

You can wait until the letter arrives. The letter has your financial aid package.

Yeah but I don’t even now if I’m accepted. The link to check application status has heavy volume error.

as posted earlier, the boston university grants are partially merit based. my parent’s efc was about 4000. and my act was a 32 and i was in the top 5%. they have a chart (that was posted earlier on this thread). it’s a combination in both that results in hefty grants.

I don’t think some of you realize that first come first served.
I sent my fafsa a couple of days after January 1st and a total of $54,050 with no scholarships.
For another school that is very generous with financial aid I sent my fafsa late (their deadline was January 1st since they are on crack) and got only 24k.

To Coolbrezze when you log in, there should be tabs on the side if you have a tab that says invitations you are in. click the tabs.

24K is a pretty high EFC
They offered the most to people with EFC’s like 5000 and below
and there were ALOT of those families esp this year

BU is not first come, first served. I really don’t understand where you get information from. BU, like every school, has its own system for evaluating aid and that includes some form of ranking - which probably includes an estimate of whether you’re likely to attend or to go elsewhere. (Some schools, btw, are known to reject many of the best candidates because they see they’re a safety and they don’t want to waste their time - and they can increase their selectivity, etc.) BU doesn’t tell anyone how they do this.

I have no idea how they assign merit aid. It is frustrating. Some of the lines seem bright and others aren’t. But the same is true of other schools. I know kids who got $2k from a school while another kid with worse scores got $12k, both merit aid.

My suggestion for anyone who would make BU first choice is to contact financial aid and talk to them. Remember that they offer admission to many more than they get as yield so the money numbers are always in flux.

Is the financial info provided noted as tentative? My daughter’s is noted this way. Wondering if this will change soon.
