Mediopollito and Hallix- same thing for me. My EFC was 16,000 (according to FAFSA) but I only got loans.

yikes, I’m really sorry about that… since NU meets 100% need you can probably call up the FA office and ask what’s up.
I’m curious as to what the formula is when they calculate the EFC. All in all it’s just a number and it’s amazing how much colleges rely on it to determine aid

My EFC was $44k and that’s exactly what I got in all federal PLUS and unsub loans.

i got 750 for my fed acad competitiveness grant, a pell grant in the amount of 3700 and a federal seog grant for 2500. Urself?

Yeah they supposeldy meet students 100% in aid. very strange that people have been shortchanged

something else you guys might wanna try is showing the school the more generous packages youve received from other colleges if thats the case

yeah. im not sure if i should appeal since I got a pretty good package…I used estimates for my CSS that were from 2008 and our income decreased in 2009.

Their isn’t a chance they would decrease your package if you appeal right?
Also, are you guys calculating the out of pocket costs by subtracting whatever they gave you in grants/workstudy from 56,000 or just 49,000 (just room/board/tuition)?
Thanks!

According to the FAFSA, my estimated EFC is under 4000, but NU is expecting us to contribute nearly 16000. In comparison, 2 other top schools are limiting our contribution to around 5000. Unless we sell our house, it will not be possible to attend NU. The FAO’s promises are nothing but empty rhetoric. While I do intend to appeal this decision, I doubt anything shall come of the appeal, nor do I expect the school’s offer to remain constant during four years of attendance if the appeal were granted.

EDIT: I considered loans (even subsidized Stafford loans) and work-study as part of our expected contribution above. (It is ~10000 not counting these.) I have to provide the money; therefore, I am contributing.
I consider the total estimated CoA of ~56000 for NU.
I’m not sure whether they could decrease the package… Someone else can hopefully answer this?

NU met my family’s EFC perfectly, I’m relieved! Sorry to all of those who got less-than-stellar aid packages, though. Definitely look into that appeals process!

@hallix and whiteandnerdy: yeah, my EFC was $15,000 according to FAFSA.

i think i also indicated that i was interested in work-study programs, but they didn’t give me any. i guess there aren’t any for music majors? or maybe i didn’t indicate that i wanted work-study. ahhh oh well.

i applied for the music school and three years ago they gave out scholarships, but now they don’t ***.

medio, are you positive that they don’t give out anything for music scholarships? I think it’s just because NU is moving more towards meeting complete familial need. However I read somewhere that there are still talent scholarships for undergrad, just that the majority would be given by NU itself. As for work-study, you don’t have to work in your major’s field; I’m sure there’s plenty of other stuff.

I’m not positive, but I’ll call the financial aid office tomorrow and check. Oberlin gave me $9000 a year merit, so I might tell NU about this package.

Ultramastodon:

It would be easier to help if you list what you received from NU and then what you received from the other two top colleges and then maybe we can give some input.

List COA
Grants / Scholarships
Pell
Stafford
Perkins
Work Study
etc.

so i sent in my CSS Profile to NU after the deadline and I am still waiting for my package…getting a little nervous but i went into the office the other day and turns out that they made an error and didnt process my information when it was sent in. i think everything is all good now though.

right now my efc from fafsa is 27000 but since NU uses the fafsa and CSS profile I think my dads salary will be taken into account (parents are divorced…live with mom).

my parents make around the same amount so could this possibly double my efc for NU…

since you guys already got accepted and financial aid info… is it too late to apply to northwestern???

^ the deadline is around January 1 every year…■■■■■.

umm no i think he’s a transfer, skywalker. don’t get so trigger happy.

it depends which quarter you’re going for. fall it’s too late. but winter/spring are still up for grabs. but transfers dont get finaid for their first year.

Fall deadline’s May 1 for transfers. I honestly wouldn’t recommend winter/spring transfer after having done one myself.
