My D logged into the WUSTL website and was able to see her financial award. We were not impressed. Now we are wondering if we can afford WUSTL. It is a great college, no doubt!

where did she go to see it? I don't see mine posted anywhere...

Give financial aid a call, explain your situation and see what they can do. You might be very surprised at what they are able to work out. If it is at all possible, they will find a way of working it out. The following info is from the website:

Once you’re admitted to Washington University, we do all we can to make your enrollment a reality:

This year, our undergraduates are receiving nearly $65 million in scholarships and grants from the University.

Many financial assistance awards equal or exceed the cost of tuition.

Washington University offers a program that seeks to eliminate need-based loans as part of its undergraduate financial assistance awards to our students from low- to middle-income families. Students who receive financial assistance come from a broad range of economic backgrounds.

Exceptional candidates for admission can apply for academic scholarships regardless of need. Last year, about 200 academic scholarships were awarded to freshmen based entirely on their academic promise.

Parents can spread their share of the costs over time using our interest-free payment plan, or they can benefit from our competitive fixed interest rate borrowing options, take up to 10 years to repay, and freeze four years of costs at the entering-year rate.

Call Student Financial Services if you have special circumstances we should consider, or if you have questions at any time. We’re here to help. Call: (888) 547-6670 (toll-free), or (314) 935-5900.

My DD checked hers and we were pleasantly surprised!! It was about $9K more than we expected. Wash U is definitely on the table!! Yeah!!!

FA look good to me.

It says "As of 5:00 p.m., Central Time, on 03/13/2009, you do not have a WU Financial Assistance Award."

But my EFC was like 17,000... am I missing something? Does it have anything to do with being a finalist for a scholarship there or are they really not giving me anything?

If you are a finalist for one of the merit awards, the final financial aid decision may be delayed untill after a final determination is made in regard to the scholarship. Be patient and I doubt that you will be dissapointed.

Thanks for the information ST2, I was having a mild panic attack. :)

Your need can not be accurately determined untill the size of the scholarship is determined. Obviously a large difference between 1/2 tuition, full tuition, full tuition plus a stipend or even multiple combinations. Good luck at the weekend just make sure you are well rested before the weekend. You will be very busy for the entire time you are on campus.

noooo i want to know my financial aid now!
If we called the Financial Aid office, would they have something figured out, even though I am a finalist for a scholarship? I would like to know what I'm getting so I can rule out public schools completely. Otherwise, I'd like to make a housing deposit. :/

I doubt it - see post above.

Thank you very much for the advice, I'll make sure to get plenty of rest during this week (my spring break) so I can be fully rested for the weekend the following week. I'm sure it will be fun!

BTW, I'm sorry for stealing this thread: back to financial award discussions!

wow. That was completely unexpected. they actually covered some of my efc.

I'm glad to hear WashU Financial Aid is as good as everyone made them out to be. Good for you smiley44 :)

D got almost nothing, a couple hundred... :(

Wow, mine was better than expected!

Mine says "you do not have a WU Financial Assistance Award", and DS isn't a finalist for one of the scholarships. I think I'll be optimistic and hope that it's just not up yet :-)

It's more fun to enjoy the acceptance than to worry about money for a few more days!

ctimeagain, do you have a high EFC? Ours is high. That may be why we got so little aid. Will Wash U match merit aid from state universities? We really love the school.

coloDad - match state school? - highly unlikely. A better plan of action is to call the financial aid office, talk to them and explain why you are not happy with the original offer. They will go out of the way to make WashU affordable if at all possible. May not always be able to make it work, but in most cases they are able to work something out. Go in positive, not negative and you have a better chance of ending up happy with the outcome.

ColoDad, yes, we had a high EFC, around 40K. did not expect much in the first place, but still surprised to see the aid this low... I do not think we can afford it.

Also I agree with ST2 that it is very unlikely they would match a state school as they are not at the same prestige level...Perhaps you can use any top 15 school's better FA to ask for a match?
