If you’re going to limit your geography to the NE, then there probably aren’t any financial safeties…but if you were to expand, there would be.

Are you an engineering major?

All I have are anecdotes. Many get H1-B visa’s for “practical training” where they can prove themselves. They often work very hard and employers often sponsor them during that period for green cards because of their talents. Additionally, many will fall in love with Americans and marry them. This isn’t a scam, and wasn’t their original intention, but it tends to happen in general when boys meet girls and vice versa. BTW, it also happens not so infrequently that the American partner moves back to the country of origin.

Nevertheless, I don’t think it’s bad for this country to educate the world’s best and brightest and then have them stay here and stimulate OUR economy, rather then their country of origin. We’re not talking about people who are going to be a net minus to the country.

Marriage is pretty much the only guaranteed way. For years I had no problem getting H1Bs for my smart international employees. That’s over, the nimbler available has gone way down and it’s truly a lottery no matter who the sponsor is.
