find college near city with good theatre dept.

Outstanding reputations for both Northwestern University and Yale University. Also consider the U of Washington [Seattle] and, surprisingly, Texas A&M.

Northwestern and Yale will give you a strong academic curriculum/environ coupled with an AMAZING theatre program.

Fordham's Theatre department is top notch. And you couldn't ask for a better loaction, 59th and Columbus, on the southwest tip of Central Park. The likes of Alan Alda, and Denzel Washington went there. I'd definitley check it out.

If your D is interested in Musical Theatre, do't forget to check out the Musical Theatre board on CC (under College Majors):

Can't believe none has mentioned USC and UCLA yet....

Here are some schools with fabulous theater departments (The list ranges from relatively good colleges/universities to being top-notch ivies, just so you know) :

Northwestern University-- near Chicago

SUNY Purchase-- about an hour from NYC-- and yes, I know it's a SUNY school but it's academics are actually pretty good and it's theater department is absolutely fabulous. Also, the campus is beautiful.

Yale University-- about two hours away from anywhere decent, but it's name speaks for itself

Sarah Lawrence-- 30 minutes away from NYC

Muhlenberg-- not that far away from Philadalphia

NYU-- of course

Drew University-- located in New Jersey, but only about an hour away from NYC

Hope I helped! Good luck!

Just thinking of some of the alum from the schools mentioned... Ron Livingston (office space), Paul Giamatti and Ed Norton were all classmates at Yale.
Dwight from The Office (US) went to U of Washington.

NYU (duh!) and UCLA immediately come to mind

NYU NYU NYU NYU NYU did I forget to say NYU?

Barnard (is also drama dept. for Columbia.) Alums Cynthia Nixon and Lauren Graham & Julia stiles, both Gyllenhaals @ Columbia.

Northwestern, as mentioned, has a long established topnotch theater program that got even better with the recent establishment of the endowed American Musical Theater Project. Their 4th production, due to soon open, is being directed by NU alum Michael Grief (director of Rent, Grey Gardens, etc.).
http://www.amtp.northwestern.edu/index.html

Lots of alumni are scattered about the many superb theater venues in Chicago (The Goodman, Steppenwolf, Lookingglass, Second City) and it’s common for students to land roles at these remarkable venues.

NU theater majors are also free to second major in any Arts and Science, Engineering or Education school program. This opportunity, coupled with the school’s overall academic reputation, is a major draw.

Bala, where are you from?

Another vote for Drew

Also, Wagner on Staten Island.
