Please help me find good school, near city ie. Boston etc. with good liberal arts and good theatre department. My daughter's grades are good, better than 4.0 and she's doing the IB programme. Her SAt s are average but she is taking ACT and SAT again. Thanks for your help!

NYU Tisch

Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY is terrific!

The first and only school that comes to my mind is NYU. But that is sort of obvious, right in the middle of NYC and arguably the best acting program in the US

Well, it is important that we first establish whether your daughter wishes to pursue a BFA or a BA. If she wishes to pursue a BFA, then NYU is a solid choice for Acting, if you can stomach the price tag. If she is serious, I would of course recommend The Juilliard School. If she wishes to pursue a BA, Emerson College in Boston (you mentioned), has a good reputation, they also have both a BFA and a BA. If she is unsure, I would consider USC. They have both programs as well. I had two friends switch from BFA to BA and one from BA to BFA within the school. It is difficult, but can be achieved. UCLA has a strong program; it is a BA but with a strong emphasis on performance. Anyways, more specific information on her personal preferences would help. hope i could be some help.

CMU has a good theatre program, but don't know about the liberal arts.

CMU and Pitt are excellent choices

CMU is VERY good. look at their alumni. it is also a BFA program. I do not know much about Pitt.

Juilliard in NYC.

Fordham ( Lincoln Center Campus), Drew University, Hofstra and Vassar all near NYC. Not as competitive as Tisch and Juilliard (some BFA,some BA).

A friend of mine is going to Emerson for their performing arts program, which I heard if very strong. Here's more information:

http://www.emerson.edu/emersonstage/

Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, 12 miles from Boston.
Debra Messing (Grace of Will & Grace) went there, as did the creators of Friends (Marta Kaufman and David Crane) and Thirtysomething (Marshall Hershkovitz).

Boston: Brandeis and I think Boston U but not sure.
NY: Julliard really goood +++
- Florida State
- Tulane: really good +
- UMiami: Really good +

We have good theatre at BU :)

Northwestern has an amazing theater dept. and is very close to Chicago -- not sure if Boston was just an example or if you wanted a school in the northeast, but if not, NU is a great school!

yale def. has one of the best theatre programs if you're looking for ivy, and it's only 2 hours away from boston and nyc

I would also recommend Northwestern. I have a friend who chose the theatre department there over Tisch, and he loves it.

summing up everyone:
NYU
Sarah Lawrence
Emerson
Juilliard
CMU
Pitt
Fordham
Drew
Hofstra
Vassar
Brandeis
Florida
Tulane
UMiami
BU
Northwestern
Yale

I'm actually doing the exact same search. Other places I've heard good things about:
UMaryland, GW, American, UMichigan, UMinnesota, Ithaca, Rutgers

One of the most important things is to get an idea of what you want. Places like Juilliard, UMiami, BU, etc, have a very "conservatory" approach-- super focused on theatre, so if you have other interests it might be difficult. On the other hand, places like Vassar, Drew, Sarah Lawrence are more liberal-artsy. After visiting like three places, I got a really good concept of what I wanted, and it's really helpful in narrowing the list.

Northwestern is def up there

Holy Cross and Brandeis.
