Finding A Roommate

When I visited the campus in August, the person who led my tour talked a little about the process for finding a roommate (he said it was almost like an online dating profile). Could someone elaborate a little more on this process? Thank you!

There a couple different ways that you could find your roommate. You can meet them in the admitted students Facebook group, you can go random, or you can search for a roommate with compatible preferences on the Housing Portal. To use this kind of “online dating” option, you create a profile that says your preferences about cleanliness, interests, etc. Then you can search around for people with similar preferences and find a roommate that way!

Once you are admitted you are invited to the Admitted Students facebook group. You can interact with other students and get to know people that way, discussing your interests. Many students find a roommate during Orientation when you can actually meet in person and see if you click. My son met his roommate on FB but they never met in person. The roommate was totally not who he said he was at all and their arrangement did not work out. Or you an go random. There is a period during the fall semester when you a request a roommate change if any rooms are available.

Because Orientation is moving to a fall-model this year instead of a summer like it was previously, meeting a roommate at orientation is no longer a feasible option. If you really want to meet up in person before rooming with someone, students sometimes meet at other events during spring or can arrange to meet up with each other over the summer on their own if you wanted to get your know roommate more that way. I will say that in my experience, random works out well most times because people don’t go in with expectations of what their roommate is going to be like!
