Finding New Passions at Boarding School

Well, today was Orientation Day for parents, and I got to see my D after having dropped her off last Friday for 3 days of preseason sports camp (which she attended somewhat reluctantly, but did so in the hopes of making some new friends before classes start). She has never before participated in team sports, wasn't terribly active this past summer, and the 3 days of workouts were pretty intense. She was exhausted... and sore! So I was speechless when she announced that she is going to play field hockey this fall, instead of participating in the school musical (this, from a girl who has never had interest in playing a sport and has never missed an audition for a school musical). I am shocked and delighted. I guess all that hype about kids finding new passions at BS is for real :)
Would love to hear from others about how your kids surprised you with new interests they discovered at school!

I found a passion for playing video games at BS that were a no no at home. :D

Sounds wonderful! I think it’s so great for the kids to try new things. My daughter isn’t into sports either but I told her when she gets to HS I want her to give it a try…she may love it!

Our son was always involved in sports but had an injury that side lined him during his first year of BS so he joined the theater group and enjoyed his time on stage. Well, it stuck and this year he had the lead part in the play.

I’ve posted before how our son never played a sport before, but is now committed to crew. Also, Choate has both coaxed and indulged the artistic side of what we once thought was a technical passion and our once STEM-focused kid will be applying to college as an artist. Go figure. Go Choate!

Go Big Green!!
