Fire in Barnard dorm

Thankfully no one was seriously hurt.
The news report spoke about a student and her mother who had to evacuate and find a place to stay as a result of last night’s fire in the building (which also houses non student residents).
First…how do you feel about your student living in a NYC building where non students also live, in Morningside Heights? I guess this means that there are no I.d. Swipes and anyone can be roaming the building at any time?
Second…is it typical for a parent to live in a dorm with a student in this building? I am assuming that this student has a single?

All the buildings have security. If there are non-students living in the building, they would have to show their ID to the doorman as well if they weren’t recognized.

My daughter lived in the next building over during her sophomore year – she had a very nice suite that year, with a spacious single room (by NYC standards) in a suite with 5 students.

I don’t know what article you are referring to, but ordinarily a parent would not be living with a student, unless there was some sort of accommodation for a disability. On the other hand, it’s very possible and far more likely that the student’s mom could have been visiting at the time-- I spent several nights as a guest in my daughter’s room in the dorm I mentioned.

My experience goes along with what Calmom described. My D lived in Plimpton, which housed Columbia as well as Barnard students. IDs were always checked. We also stayed with her several times.

My D is in that type of building also and she said the security is still present. I would consider staying with her if needed!
