Fireworks - Yes or No?

The preceding comic shows Rover isn’t upset about fireworks. Only curious. Red just wants to stay with him and gives that as an excuse.

I just saw an article about drone shows in UT and CO - mainly because of fear of forest fires. It sounds like a great alternative!

I always liked fireworks, but am a little over it now that I m in my 50s  . And it was always fun to take my kids.

We were usually at a small mountain resort. So the fireworks were close and the noise in the small valley was pretty deafening - I feel bad for the dogs, the wildlife (deer, birds, etc.), and the environment. It seems like professional ones far away from people/high in the sky are better.

Definitely “no” to individuals lighting them off, especially late at night.

Drone shows can be amazing. Seattle experimented with replacing some fireworks at the Needle with a drone show plus virtual reality add-ons for TV viewers. The last one was decent. Needs more work but it was a great start IMO.

I wonder if we are neighbors ??? techie displays over the lake seem to be common.

Okay, I can accept that this would be a possible (imo generous) way to interpret it. It just struck me as as very tone deaf, in light of how many people have made it known what an issue it is for their dogs. And I don’t even have dogs! And the couple in the comic do!

I have had it with the people in my town who apparently equate shooting off random fireworks with being patriotic. No consideration for anyone. The country will fall apart if these yahoos can’t shoot off fireworks . It starts three or four days ahead of the fourth and will continue several days after and yes, it is illegal. Veterans, babies, dogs…they have made it clear on the local facebook that they don’t care.

Loved our town fireworks when I was a kid, especially since I wasn’t part of my parents hassle of where would we park, keeping an eye on us kids, etc. Liked our town’s fireworks when my kids were small, despite the hassle of where would we park and keeping up with my kids, because it reminded me of that magical experience I loved as a kid. The location changed once my kids were old enough to go on their own and it wasn’t the same and now they don’t even have it and I don’t miss it. Love the fireworks shows at Disney World. Hate all personal fireworks even though we live in a state where there are fireworks selling stands everywhere. Ironically currently comforting my dog who is barking his head off because of a thunderstorm, which is I guess postponing the neighbors shooting off fireworks as they do every year which also sets him off barking.

Another tragedy.

I’m happy, heard hardly any fireworks anywhere—at our friend’s place and at our house, for 7/4 and days leading up to it. I’m glad, since there are so many dogs and pets in our neighborhood and I’m sure many would be scared/unhappy with the loud noises and possible PTSD for veterans as well.

That seems unusual to me…in past years have there been fireworks? Or are they available for purchase on the island(s)???

After fireworks Friday-Tuesday nightly, I (and my pup!) hope tonight might be fireworks free!

Agree it is unusual but I admit I’m glad. I hate the smoke & haze—really unhealthy to have all that fine particulate matter that worsens our air quality.

We didn’t have the usual 4th fireworks in and around the neighborhood either. Maybe people don’t have the discretionary income to buy a mountain of fireworks this year.

We’re close enough to Boston that we hear the fireworks across the water.

I’ve always loved fireworks but honestly, they’re starting to get a bit boring after all these decades. Started at the local park when I was a kid. Then in Chicago we attended many many Venetian Night and July 3 Grant Park fireworks - I mentioned to husband last night that it just doesn’t seem right without a few cannon going off like the Chicago Symphony used to do.

After moving to the suburbs, we attended a couple of different community events - pretty well funded (I think the Mafia was involved with one venue, allegedly). And on our travels we’ve seen them at Boston (great), Seattle (also great), and San Francisco (from outside Ghirardelli). Also I think Door County.

Over the decades, there have been tons of unique fireworks which I don’t see as much lately - perhaps too expensive? But the best was at the 1984 Louisiana Exposition aka New Orleans Worlds Fair. They gave each night to a different country. We watched an hour of China the night we were there - an hour of all green but different fireworks. Fabulous.

Now we can just drive five minutes and park on a hillside overlooking San Diego Bay and watch the Big Bay Boom with dozens of neighborhood families. But if it wasn’t for the fact they have four barges shooting them off, they weren’t anything really special - not like New York, which we watched on tv.

Our doodle is 7 yr old and for the first time ever showed severe fear of fireworks. We went for a walk in the evening (not dark) and apparently people in the neighborhood started celebrating early. I’m thankful we had her on a leash- she made a strong b-line to the house two minutes into the walk. I had to look up online what to do. We wrapped her in a throw blanket, sat her next to us on the couch, held our arms on her torso, and watched the last of Ted Lasso loudly. That worked.

It definitely reminded me of the book Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin. Excellent book.

Our neighborhood Facebook page is filled with mean comments today about a neighbor who called the police about fireworks on his street last night. It’s obvious that a number of people on the street dislike this neighbor. I know that I should no longer be shocked by the things people post, but I am … why on earth would anyone air their grievances that way? Clearly the point is to get others to dislike the neighbor as much as they do, but we aren’t in junior high anymore.

I live in NYC in one of the best areas to view the fireworks. I can’t see any from my apartment, but there’s a good viewing area a short walk away. It’s an annual event. Before they show they had a drone display. Very impressive.

My S invited his cousins to his place in Long Island City, where they had an excellent view of the drones & fireworks over East River.

Yes to professional shows!

No to crazy neighbors who let fireworks off for days (and nights) that rock the house and trigger car alarms.

I love professional fireworks displays, particularly the amazing ones at WDW.

I’m sick of inconsiderate people in our current area who are still shooting off fireworks tonight. It’s illegal, but there’s no enforcement. Way too many residents bluster about their “freedoms” and right to celebrate days before and after the fourth.

As I get older, I become more of a “No”. I’ve been a good sport over the years in going to official fireworks shows on the 4th and with my kids when we’ve been at Disney, etc. Yes, they are beautiful, but I no longer have the desire to battle traffic, parking, crowds to see them in person.

I wish they would completely eliminate the ability of lay-people to purchase any kind of fireworks. My city is on the border of a state that allows the purchasing of fireworks, so there’s no shortage of backyard yahoo’ing around here. And it’s not limited to the 4th either - they go just as wild for New Years. It’s several days or so of it each time.

I feel horrible for the animals and people who have PTSD from military service or other auditory sensitivity issues. It’s not just for a couple of hours on one day a year, it’s trying to go sleep 3 days later at 11pm when your neighbor decides to use up the leftovers in their backyard.
