The thing I noticed here this year, where fireworks are banned, is that it isn’t folks using the “safe and sane” fireworks we had and had for our kids - sparklers, cones that shoot a 6 foot stream of sparks, things that wiggle around on the ground. No, individuals have mortars that shoot up into the air and then explode. I wouldn’t mind neighborhood low-key fireworks. My kids enjoyed those and so did I, but it’s the barrage of sparks in the sky that are both way too loud and make us all anxious about starting fires. When did that shift happen?
I live in Colorado and it is the cities that ban fireworks but many unincorporated areas have no bans so big tents selling all kinds of things pop up in June to sell them. Those are still mostly sparklers and popping things. They are illegal to use in Denver (I live in the city limits) but people do it anyway.
However, the big boomers come from Wyoming. There is a huge fireworks store at Exit 2 on the interstate, exactly 100 miles from my house. Every city has a hotline to report illegal use and the news stations were reporting exactly 0 tickets issued, fireworks confiscated, or action of any kind taken. This despite at least two major house fires started by illegal fireworks.
My friend said at about 10 pm there were some big flashes and bangs by her house so she went outside and yelled at a guy “What are you doing? You are going to light my house on fire!” and he jumped on a bike and rode away with his fireworks. He didn’t live there, just riding around setting off fireworks. He also didn’t have an audience, so what’s the fun in that?
I’m on a FB site for missing pets in PA - so many dogs missing that were spooked by fireworks this week.
Also, we had to listen to a neighbor setting them off every night since the 4th. They’ve always been obnoxious so not surprised.
I have always enjoyed seeing fireworks displays, but don’t enjoy the traffic, etc. related to them. I saw a poster related to fireworks that talked about how much trouble fireworks cause for different groups. I can’t find it now. It made me think about how traumatic the sounds really are for different groups.
