I'm just wondering, to all the applicants, is UW your first choice?

yes…

nope, but it’s the responsible one since my top choice will put me in debt an additional $100k, whereas I’ll have minimal debt at UW (in state)

yes OOS but may not be attending because of the massive potential tuition (14%) increase. Got to say though for instate it isn’t too bad but for OOS it is big. Average instate tuition in CA at the UC’s is $9000 plus or minus a few hundred. Plus WA has good fine aide for in-staters not OOS which is understandable.

Yeah, I wish I was in your position. I would’ve gotten into Berkeley easily (got into UCLA, rejected from berkeley), and been able to go because it had a reasonable cost. Berkeley >> Washington for engineering and physics.

Yup! I’ve wanted to go to UW since sophomore year!

I’m really glad I was accepted – the Japanese program at the UW is great; so is the crew team!

definitely has been my first choice since i was little. you wouldn’t believe how upset i was to get waitlisted…hopefully some spots open up though

haha, I’d love to switch state residency with you
UCLA is my #1 but because of OOS tuition I’m probably going to UW.
I’m wondering how many people are giving up their first choice for UW to save money.

I’m sorry to those who has UW as #1 but didn’t get in, unfortunately that happened to my friend too.

yes. #1 all the way… How can you pass up a cheap (relatively), incredible education??? (I’m instate…)

Pikachiu-good idea, sitching places, you and D could switch parents and all would be good. You guys are right, she is the only person I know who is sort of sad to be probably going to UCLA. Initially UW was still cheaper than private schools for OOS’er when she started considering it two years ago. Unfortunately, it appears to be going in the direction of the UC’s for OOS. You in-state kids need to realize what a bargain you have at UW even if they increase tuition 14%. It is still quite a bit cheaper than in-state tuition at the UC’s. On the other hand, it is always fun to experience something different:)

I’m not sure if I am going yet. It was a tie for my top choice, more because I wasn’t sure if I was ready to leave state. Now that I know I am, its more financial stuff holding me back…

If only OOS experience isn’t so expensive… Oh well, I finally paid UW/Seattle a visit today, walking around the campus, I realized even if it wasn’t my top choice, I can see myself going there and be happy.
Plus, I fell in love with all the restaurants on the ave. Got me motivated to apply for housing… If I wake up feeling the same way tomorrow, I’ll submit my SIR

I would encourage you to apply for housing regardless. Housing goes fast at UW, and you can apply without committing (thats what I did).

You have to put in a $500 deposit, but if you cancel it by May 15 you get all your money back.

No, not at all. UW was actually my safety (albeit an extremely good safety…). I ended up applying to a ton of super-reaches (I’m sure you can guess them all), because those were the only places that I would get a decent amount of financial aid at. I’ve been waitlisted at 2 of them, and rejected at the rest, which I fully expected. If I’m taken off of a waitlist, I will in all likelihood go to the school that does so, but if I’m not, I am happy with UW. I could have applied to more matches, but then that would raise the question “UW or random inserted match school?” Without question, UW would win, considering how good it is. So, I don’t know what my point is anymore…but UW is cool, though I won’t pretend that I didn’t want to go anywhere else over UW. I’m probably mostly biased because UW is pretty much next-door and has always been there…I think I’m experiencing the “grass is greener on the other side” syndrome. Anyways.

No…it was really my last choice because I want to go to a small school (having 500 students in one class never has appealed to me and never will). I just applied because I felt like it was a safety or something (Okay I really shouldn’t have thought of it as a safety but it didn’t matter anyhow) and because I could handle going there (as opposed to WWU or any of the other state schools) if I needed to - I use their physics program at my community college and really enjoy it (Tutorial is awesome…more awesome than anything I’ve ever done…for that I am jealous of the lucky physics people who do get to go to UW!!).
I probably won’t end up going because it would cost the exact same amount for me to go to UW as it would to go to my first choice school. Not a desirable amount but I really could not see myself going in debt over UW…no way. yikes! It’s so expensive…and I’m instate! I can’t imagine the cost for the out of staters! And I don’t really enjoy Seattle that much. I would have to live with relatives which means commuting…and Seattle + my driving = not good. Anyways, good luck to those of you for whom UW is the first choice!
