UW vs. UC Berkeley

Hello, so I am a California resident and I'm considering both schools. I know that Berkeley is the logical choice given in-state tuition and general prestige, but I really liked UW's campus and the city of Seattle. I've grown up in the Bay Area, and I really want to get out on my own but I'm having trouble turning down Berkeley. Thoughts?

Go to Berkeley.

Had the exact same situation but flipped. I chose my state school (UW) to save money. Hated it the first two years; loving these last two years (currently finishing my third year).

Make your choice based on what you want out of college.
Big differences between UW and Berkeley:
costs (although in-state CA isn’t great these days)
“prestige” - you may feel better about yourself at Berkeley
student apathy (UW) vs. activism (Berkeley)
semester vs. quarter (more time to learn vs. more course choices)
UW many of the best departments require you to apply to your major… very difficult depending on what you are interested in.
urban vs. town
weather

What do you plan to major in? That could make the big difference.
Otherwise both schools are awesome in similar ways, frustrating in similar ways.

What else are you hoping to get out of your college experience? Fun? Friends? Internships? An easy degree? Research? Community?

Hey guys, I know this was posted already 3 years ago! But I find myself in the same situation… I am a WA resident, and I love UW and its campus, but for some superficial reason I feel that I would be more welcome at Berkeley… I need to put some serious pros and cons on the table. By the way,I want to double major in anthropology and something else I have to decide. Pros and cons?

$108,136 > $240,292 (estimated cost over 4 years, per collegedata.com)

Can you afford the $57k/year cost of attendance at Berkeley? UCs do not give any financial aid for OOS students.
