first day of school: what're you wearing?

QFT. If you plan to venture into the professional world, I’m sure you’ll spend much less to dress appropriately than someone who has practically bought out HotTopic.

re:Forever21- a lot of their men’s stuff looks pretty nice, but the store near me is women’s only.

@YellowDaisies- I’m already an URM! :D

^^^ I completely agree.

Preppy is not boring. I would say I dress more distinctively than any of my friends, and people like the colors.

^^^^^ Yeah, and that’s like one out of thousands of photos? And I think the lack of pants offsets the preppiness :stuck_out_tongue:

J. Crew practically screams hardcore preppy. Just like at this: [Women’s Sweaters & Cardigans - Cashmere Sweaters, Cotton, V-Neck & Merino Cardigan Sweaters - J.Crew](http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/sweaters.jsp)
It just goes on and on. Who goes to school dressed like this everyday? It’s too put together - unless you’re a teacher, though because you’re a working (wo)man who NEEDS to look put together.

But you’re just a kid. You’re not even working yet.

^^^^ Ew… prep schools…

On another note, I think it is fascinating how different student and school cultures across the US can be :O

I don’t see whats wrong with going to school dressed like that. People express themselves in different ways, and if they like how they look, let them be

^^…i go to school dressed like that every day. way to belittle my sophisticated sense of style and my excellent private education. i’m so ashamed now because i don’t go to public school and wear slightly less expensive “teen clothes”

That’s why you mix and match so you make it your own!
Honestly I don’t even think twice about it, it’s just the way that I’ve been brought up-my mother’s family is very preppy.

Exhibit B (J. Crew): [Women’s sweaters - merino - Shimmering paillette vest - J.Crew](http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/sweaters/merino/PRDOVR~28146/28146.jsp)

Shall we have a poll on which is teen-like and which is more teacher-ish (in a horrific shade of yellow and teal)?

It gave me a good excuse to browse both website ;)

A note that may seem part of the debate but really isn’t: Btw, I love the J. Crew website! I may have to hunt for a store nearby. So cute! It is really expensive though

But I’m sure that whatever minority you are is much more represented than PIRATES  !

The Forever 21 sweater looks like something Jackie O. would wear, minus the hideous colors that don’t even go together.
OTOH, I’m not a fan of the J.Crew vest.
I guess that makes sense since I’m a guy…
Wow, I really don’t want to go to bed for school tomorrow, can you tell? ;D

^^^ Haha, you chose select photos. Two can play at that game.

Exhibit A (J. Crew): [Women’s blazers - suiting jackets - Super 120s nouvelle jacket - J.Crew](http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/blazers/suitingjackets/PRDOVR~23346/23346.jsp)
Exhibit B (Forever21): http://www.forever21.com/product.asp?catalog_name=FOREVER21&category_name=top_camis_tanks&product_id=2000002046&Page=1</a></p>

^^^^^ I beg to differ. Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Charlotte Russe, H&M, Nordstroms, Express, and many other similar non-preppy stores can be far more expensive than “sophisticated” uniform, preppy stores like J. Crew. Of course, I am speaking in terms of the teenagers who are of the upper-middle class or above - those who do certainly exist, certainly are of the same social status as you are, and certainly do not dress preppy - to compare to your “private school” and “more expensive” life.

^ OK, those aren’t even the same items.

[Women’s sweaters - wool blends - Whisper glimmer cardigan - J.Crew](http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/sweaters/woolblends/PRDOVR~29185/29185.jsp)

that outfit’s like something i’d wear to school. it’s not like i walk around in a blazer and trousers, hardly anyone does.

^^ Neither were the items that YellowDaisies showed…

^^^^ But my point was that there is a little bit of both at each stores. You can find some of that “dreaded preppy” look at Forever 21, and some of the “teen” things at J. Crew. So you don’t have a right to categorize all J. Crew shoppers as “boring” and “preppy” and “nerdy”…although, there’s nothing wrong with that. How would you like it if we categorized you as “slutty” or “trashy”? We don’t because while we realize that there are some things at your stores that are that way, that’s not the only thing that is in that store. Plus, you have the right to express yourself anyway you choose

Yeah, those aren’t even remotely the same.

re:Price- Yeah, J. Crew is expensive. That’s why I shop the Sale section. Last time I was there I picked up two T-shirts for about $10 each, and they were far better quality than what could be purchased at Wal-Mart for about $5 less. I mean geez, my parents mostly shop at Wal-Mart and its ilk, so yeah I know about the price difference.

@ rosco… wow that’s great! Banana Republic is the same way.

@ Izzy Busy Bee… I like that a lot too.

I like this too [Women’s sweaters - merino - Merino vest - J.Crew](http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/sweaters/merino/PRDOVR~28148/28148.jsp)

^^^ Vintage =/= Normal Teenage Clothing =/= Slutty, Trashy
Vintage = Floral, Laidback, Light Clothing, Traditional Leather
Normal Teenage Clothing = Tank Top or T-shirt + Shorty Shorts + Possible Hoodie and Sneakers

Nope, I loves me a goods internet CC fight- er I mean debate

Me too  Goodnight! Majority rules Truffliepuff, but we shall continue to allow you to where whatever you please without dissing the stores you shop in

@ YellowDaisies- Goodnight! Have a good first day, and it was nice to meet you!
@Truffliepuff- Honestly this debate seems pretty silly and doesn’t carry much meaning. I’m sure you’re a very nice person!
I’m just not ready to go to bed and face the start of senior year tomorrow… :D

well, for everyone talking trash about j. crew… i personally love the store. but i’m 15 and i shop at banana republic, lacoste, ralph lauren, etc. i have the style of a 30-year-old man. but i usually end up wearing sweats to school since everyone makes fun of me… i’m too much of a jock to do it :(
