Mavitale, I’m so happy you have a plan. I’ve been there with a couple of issues this year already, and I agree, Tulane is amazing. I feel so fortunate that my dd is in such a supportive environment. A student can’t go from a helicopter parent (like myself) to being 100% on their own. Tulane offers a nice balance.

I started up the helicopter and transmitted a reminder to S to set his clocks back one hour tonight. Having lived in Arizona all his life ( a state that doesn’t observe daylight savings time) he isn’t used to that twice a year ritual. Now that he calls New Orleans home, it’s time to add that to his college experience.

So, while S is continuing to love Tulane (except for Calculus!!! Oh how we hate math!..but I digress…). He has just gotten over being sick (with 6 days of fever) for the third time since he started in August. I just wanted to report how great the health center has been. S has been there several times and they have really been great. We have even spoken to the doctor ourselves a couple of times, and he could not have been nicer. Several of the professors have also been very accommodating, offering extensions and opportunities for extra credit if he needs it.
I keep saying that being in college is like living in a petri dish! So tell your kids to buy lots of purell and to wash their hands! I’m hoping that he can make it to Thanksgiving without getting sick again!

Wow, that is a shame jozuko. I guess he got the flu, but he should still get a flu shot if he hasn’t already. Different possible strains and all that.

No not the flu. He got the shot several weeks ago. He just keeps picking up viruses. I felt so bad. He didn’t even get to go out on Halloween (had a costume and everything). Although he did say that it rained all night on Halloween so he wasn’t that upset.
I must say that I’m really proud of him. He’s kept up with most of his class work (although he’s lost in calc…have I mentioned how much we hate math??!)

Sorry to hear your son has been sick. My D has had a couple of rounds of fever and her roommate has had strep and bronchitis. I’m afraid it’s par for the course freshman year. Funny you mention calc - my D is dreading that course. May look into taking it over the summer.

jozuko - 6th time being sick - omg! My s had strep w/ a fever over fall break. Health center was great - found him meds to take since he doesn’t swallow pills (I don’t think this will ever change!). Your S is a real trooper - kudos to him.

Wow Bloomy! You win! 6 times? I think that we need to dip immerse these kids in purell or wrap them in bubble wrap! Hopefully they can stay healthy for a while now.
As for our deep hatred of math and Calculus in particular…S went to the tutoring center a couple of times, but did not really find it that helpful. So, someone told him that professional tutors from Princeton Review will come to campus and tutor (for $$ of course). I just got off the phone with them. They have 3 levels of tutors, depending on experience 1-Private= teachers who have recently become tutors ($115 hr), 2-Master (teachers with 2-4 years experience tutoring ($164 hr) and 3- Premier 4+ years experience ($275hr). You have to commit to at least 3 hours.
I’m thinking that if he has a tutor 1-2 times a week he will need between 4-6 hours. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Sorry Jozuko - I thought you said your S was sick 6 times - it was 6 days of fever - my mistake. My S was sick that once but it was enough…

BTW - my S got a 5 on the AP Calc BC test last year - I am sure he can help…tell your S to get in touch w/him.

jozuko- Those rates are insane. There are students who are Math Major/minors that are available to tutor the intro Calc classes and will charge $25 per hour. All you son needs to do is inquire at the Math office or tutoring center.

He went to the tutoring center bust said it wasn’t much help, I will tell him to inquire at the math office. Thanks maxsdad

Our son texted us after his classes today. He is unsure about his Spanish class, feels his high school spanish teachers did not prepare him adequately for this. (I KNOW they did not, I had the same teachers when I was in HS and they are AWFUL!)

He enjoyed his other two classes today and already has a 30 page research paper to start working on! He was going to eat lunch and “read. a lot.”

@dolphnlvr6 If he needs any help with Spanish, I happen to know someone at Tulane who is fluent and could help him.

Thanks I appreciate that! Will let you know !

Loved his classes today, especially Ethics.
