Both my parents attended a 2 year college…I will be the first of my entire family to be attending a four year college. I have no legacy, but do I count as a “first generation” in the application process since I will be the first to attend a four year college? Thank you
Yes, I believe so.
I don’t think an associate degree is what they meant but in all honesty it asks something like, ‘did your parents go to college’ I don’t think they are asking, ‘do you parents have a bachelor’s degree’
Not sure what the right answer is.
I completed my college degree at the age of 40, so my oldest child was considered first generation, but my younger two weren’t. They were all raised the same way and our quality of life did not change during that time. I hate the how everything and everyone gets categorized. (Though I understand that this is actually not helpful.)
Call admissions to be sure.
It’s not up to admissions. The common app asked the question if your parents attended college. you answer “none”, “some” etc. colleges see that answer.
With a bit of research I found this common app instruction article which gives a definitive answer:

Apparently they are really asking, have your parents gotten a Bachelor’s degree. So if they only got an Associate 2 year degree then you are ok to put down FIRST GENERATION.
Good luck!
