Currently a freshman at a four-year university in the northwest. I'm from Alaska and am looking to transfer out. My choices so far areeeee:
University of Washington
Rutgers University
Suny - Binghamton
Stony Brook
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
Safeties: Ohio State
Virginia Tech

I will be majoring in economics. I went to the east coast over the summer and absolutely loved it. The Suny's will not work out because you need a minimum of 24 credits when you are filling out the application and I will only have 17 by the time I apply. I did terrible in high school ( 2.3ish) but my first semester of college I have a 3.53 and great extracurriculars.Aiming for a 4.0 second semester. I think I'll be able to get into Rutger's and Udubb. Cali schools are off-limits since you have to have 2 years of college under your belt to apply.

So ultimately the question is....seattle,washington or new brunswick, new jersey? They're closely ranked and have closely ranked economics departments. btw, I am an Indian Asian student if that has any effect. Seattle is so close to home and convenient though, it almost seems ridiculous to go across the country for Rutgers. I do want to go to Rutger's much more though and am leaning towards attending college there.

Or should I just do a semester abroad and then apply to the Suny's for next spring semester 2012? They are cheaper although money isn't really a issue here. Except for Michigan, 40,000 for tuition is just too much.

Thanks alot everyone, If you can recommend any other schools it would be greatly appreciated. Mainly looking for top public schools, east or west coast that don't have private school prices (Michigan, UVA for example).

Why bother to apply to UMich if you can’t afford the tuition?
There are lots of positive comments about UW on this forum, and going there would save you travel time and money. Without additional information, that sounds like the best bet.

I don’t think I would do a semester abroad right before transfering to a uni because the credits you earn abroad may not transfer to the colleges you are looking at. Since there are quite a few in different regions of the country, I would bet some of those credits you take abroad may not transfer. Some of the sunys are a great value so definitely consider those but really if money is not an issue then I would try to visit the campuses and see which one felt like the best fit.

I’m trying to figure out why tOSU and VaTech are labeled safeties but Rutgers is not.

Why don’t you take academic classes next semester and then try to transfer to a SUNY if they really appeal to you?

Thank you so much!
You’re right, no reason to apply to Michigan then.
And Erin’s Dad, I see OSU and VTech as much easier to get into compared to Rutgers.
OSU has almost an 80% acceptance and accepts almost 90% of its transfer applicants.
As for VTech, a bit less but still relatively easy to get into. In my eyes, Rutgers stands much higher academically.

Thanks for the input, visiting will be the ideal way to really figure this all out. I do see as Rutgers having more potential though, considering the name recognition, location ( nyc, philly,dc) compared to UW ( lone school in Pacific Northwest, not much name recognition outside of the west coast, intense competition for grades)

I just can’t do another semester at this university ( U of Idaho), absolutely hate it so I was considering a semester abroad, but if that holds true cloudman I may have to pass. Maybe I’ll just go to Rutgers and if I must, transfer to a SUNY after. Definitely won’t be able to do another semester here after spring semester.

VTech has a 55% transfer acceptance rate and the 75%ile SAT is 1940, 44% in the top 10%.
Rutgers has a 44% transfer accepteance rate and the 75%ile SAT is 1950, 42% in the top 10%.
OSU has a 86% transfer acceptance rate and the 75%ile SAT is 1980, 49% in the top 10%.

They really aren’t any different in admission based on the scores/ranks.

True, but I do still believe that Rutgers is on another level compared to OSU and VTech.

It sounds to me like you really fancy Rutgers haha you should follow your gut and go for it and hey if it doesn’t work out you still got the other ones on your list.
