First Quarter Grades

My senior first quarter grades are all doing really good except for 1 (AP Research 100, AP Compsci A 95, AP Psychology 100, AP Lit 100, Yearbook 100, Life Sports 100, Work/Study 100, Ladies Choir 100 and… AP Calc AB 85). Even if the other grades may go down a little bit next week (which is when grades are finalized), I doubt it will be by more that 1-3 points. My previous GPAs are all in the high 97s or low/mid-98s.

The issue is that students in my school have quarter grades that are probably as high as my other grades without having failed that one grade like I did.

My school reports everyone’s first quarter.

Do you think the AP Calc grade will have a big effect on my ED admissions?

Are you applying for CS/math? If not, it likely won’t impact your ED candidacy, as your other grades are high and AP Calculus AB is a difficult class. However, no one but Brown Undergraduate Admissions knows for certain, and once grades have posted, they are out of your control. A B’s not a bad grade, no matter what some on CC might say, so don’t stress too much about one here or there!

Hope that helps! Good luck with admissions!

Thank you for replying! No, I’m not applying for a CS/math or science-related major.

Some extra info.: Part of the reason why my grade for Calc is so bad is because I struggled with technical difficulties with my first test. The test was online and almost half of my test didn’t fully load until the last 4 minutes or so. My teacher said he softened the impact of that on my test to an extent, but it still partially damaged my test grade. There are only 2 tests for this quarter. Should I explain this in the extra info. part of my common app?

@lilacsmile IMO it should be fine b/c a B’s not a bad grade. I had multiple Bs in AP classes and was still admitted, so b/c it’s showing course rigor, especially in a course unrelated to your major, you’ll likely be fine. However, your application is your application so any decisions about it are up to you. You may want to ask your HS counselor about that, as they’ll be much more knowledgeable than me.

Hope that helps!

ahh thank you for your advice! I talked with my counselor and she pretty much said the same things you did.

bump! heh

You didn’t fail calc.

Are AP lit and AP calc the only cores this semester? You completed all other cores at the level (rigor and number of years) the highly competitive colleges want to see? That’s more important than a non-STEM kid getting a B in calc.

Yes, that’s true, I didn’t fail calc. I guess the stress is making me define B’s as failing grades… :frowning: I’ve already done Bio, USH, and Lang (and Seminar although that isn’t core) and have gotten a 5 or 4 on them. My school grades were very good (96+) for all four.

I think the non-STEM thing is a big factor in the B being okay, which is relieving to hear. BTW thank you for replying!
