Hi, Im going to be a freshman at UCLA this fall, and I have been playin with the course planner on my.ucla.edu I ve come up with a schedule that I like, but I was wondering if this course plan may be overkill for a first year. I am pre-political science right now, and I am planning on doubling up with comm studies, my goal is to graduate as quickly as possible with the best set up for entering law school(gpa/lsat scores).

It is 19 units:

Poly Sci 10
Poly Sci 40
Psych 10
Stats 10

i suggest taking one off. but if ur a really competitive person and have study habits, by all mean go for it

Your orientation counselor is going to advise you to only take three classes, but if you think you have what it takes to do 4 by all means go ahead. I heard Poly Sci 40 was really easy with Schwartz and that all you have to do is memorize some stuff, but I don’t even know if you will be able to get in the class by the time you have orientation cause there are only about 15 spots left. Just keep that in mind.

Yah all of those classes are very popular. Most, if not all, of the spots will be taken in those classes so definitely have a back up plan.

Here are the problems I see:
Poli sci classes fill up fast, I doubt you’ll be able to get both of those classes.
Orientation counselors only let you sign up for 3 classes. While you can still sign up for more when you get back, I recommend against it if you want a high GPA. it’s nice to test the waters first. However, your classes are pretty easy so it’s definitely doable.
The final thing is that your schedule will probably have to be rearranged because in addition to the people signing up at orientation, continuing students are still enrolling. Unless you picked unpopular discussion times (very early or late) you will probably have to readjust.

As a poli-sci major, I STRONGLY advise against taking all those classes first quarter. Like everyone said, take three. Stats 10 counts for comm so you don’t want to end up getting a B in it. Wait and take it later (you have enough time).

Stats 10 is a time-consuming class. Definitely wait to take that.

PS 40, on the other hand, is a joke of a class. Good luck getting into it, though.

How is Stats 10 time consuming?

Time-consuming relative to other north campus classes would be more accurate, my bad.

Aren’t you only allowed 16 units a quarter??

19 units for College of Letters and Science, 21 for engineering.

Yes, 19 units. Your desired schedule is 20 units, I believe.

So… not gonna happen, kid.

Edit: Psych 10 is actually 4 units, so my bad.

But still. You may or may not be able to handle 4 classes but the thing is, you just DON’T KNOW. The obvious smart thing to do would be to feel it out rather than being an idiot and diving into a potential schedule that you can’t handle. It’s not as if you don’t have 11 more quarters to take 4 classes if you want.
