I was also planning a double major and I also wanted to take 4 classes my first quarter, but EVERYONE at orientation will tell you not to. Some people on this board also don't recommend more than 3 your first quarter. Use the class planner on myUCLA and decide for yourself. I thought the 4 class schedule was a bit much (19 units btw).

if youre majoring in poli sci, i recommend taking poli sci 6 (data analysis) instead of stats 10. it'll be much more useful in terms of research and understanding stuff like polls, which i imagine you might use if a political/communications related job.

btw i dont think you'll be able to enroll in world politics or american government your first quarter. those two fill up ridiculously fast.

Jimmy: I just found out that 20 units isnt the minimum for UCLA (I know...my UCLA knowledge STINKS) but honestly taking 4 classes a quarter is the only way I'll manage. Plus I want to study abroad and do a semester in Washington. BOO :( What are you taking next year? (Assuming you are going to be a freshman.)

kfc: thanks for the info! what poli sci courses would u recommend for a first quarter freshman??

poli sci 30 and 40 are all filled up as is soc 1

I am currently taking German 1, German 50B, english comp 3, fiat lux, and i am still thinking about taking philos 21, but it will be highly unlikely.

Love Kochian. He's awesome.

Heard he's pretty hard for speech though.

/He's my advisor for an EC, so I can't vouch for how he is in the classroom.

Oh and Gregory is either love or hate. Have to have the right kind of personality to do well with her.

And Comm 10 is a notorious comm weeder course. Just as a warning.

Minimum? That's quite rigorous.

Yeah 20 would be intense.

you can't even enroll in 20 units without petitioning lol. that means it's TOO MUCH. haha.

poli sci 20 and 40. maybe 30 or 50. i dont recommend taking 10 at all, but that's just me. some people like political theory haha. you should be able to get into at least one of the above during your freshman year.

I took PS10 my first quarter and it was not fun. Although, it made my other poli sci classes seem really easy. PS40 was almost insultingly easy (The Professor did not change the midterm or final and I had last years copies, so I guess that helps).

did you take ps40 with schwartz?

for whatever reason i got killed in his class. my TA graded really brutally on my essays.

so much for bruinwalk saying his class is a GPA booster.

I had Schwartz. I guess my TA wasn't too hard, although I know of others who were easier as well. I got an A and a B on my essays but the midterm and final really helped since I knew the questions beforehand :)

all LD poli sci classes are filled up, in fact they were just as 101 was starting. im not goign to even bother until sophomore year.

i knew freshmen who got into polisci 10 fall quarter and polisci 40 winter quarter this past year.

ok comm 10 is not that hard!! it is STRICT MEMORIZATION. if you put in the time for memorizing before the midterm and final you will be fine. also dont even think about writing notes by hand haha, bring the laptop, it will save you. the concepts are very simple and you just have to know it word for word regardless of what he says. I got an A in the class. however if you are not trying to be a comm major, not sure if the time spent memorizing will be worth it.

Yep. Hence the weeder thing.

Comm, especially the topics covered in Comm 10, is not inherently a difficult subject. The way the courses are graded is what makes them grade-threatening.

DON'T GET HECTOR NEGRETE AS A TA IF YOU TAKE COMM 10. He grades like a nazi and your grade will be a whole grade lower than if you had gotten another TA.

just a warning.

Recommendations for lower div PS classes...

Thies for comparative (he's hard, but you'll be VERY well prepared for later courses)
Walker for PS 10
PS6 with Zaller, fo' sho'
