Hi, I’m a Senior in High School and am in need of some advise/help.
I just finished my finals and I believe that I failed one of them. My grades haven’t been posted yet so I don’t know yet what my grade is, but I’m still worried.
I generally get good grades (mainly A’s and a couple of B’s). My unweighted GPA is around a 3.78 and my weighted is around 4.1. I’ve taken 4 AP courses already (5 in total including AP Government and Policies next semester) and 4 Honors courses as well. I’ve gotten over 100 hours of community service as well. I haven’t participated in many extracurricular activities due to the fact I take care of a sibling with disabilities once I get home. I have participated in Badminton during my Freshman year, Key Club and Acts of Random Kindness in Junior year, started a club focused on cleaning and improving my school, and have been actively petitioning my school to get cleaner bathrooms.
I applied for UCSD, UCI, UCR, UCSB, U of O (Accepted to because of EA), UW - Seattle, and Vanderbilt.
My courses for 1st semester were:
- Honors Pre-Calculus
- AP Macroeconomics
- Digital Photography 1
- AP English Literature and Composition
- Psychology 1
- American Sign Language 3
What are my chances of getting accepted if I receive a C- or a D+ in AP Macroeconomics? Are my chances of getting into these schools still good even with that one slip up in AP Macroeconomics? Or do I have to do something else to try and save my decisions? (I don’t have a college counselor and my school counselor isn’t that great. I am a First Generation Senior and so I don’t have people to help me out with this.)
For the UC’s, a D could result in your acceptance being rescinded so hopefully you end up with a C- or higher. All acceptances are provisional so for the UC’s listed, you need to maintain a 3.0 weighted overall Senior GPA with no D’s or F’s. Also UC’s do not consider the +/-. If you however end up with a D, then you need to contact the UC’s as follows:
Freshmen: If you change schools, add or drop a course, or fail to earn a C or better in a course after you submit your application, you must notify the UC Application Center by email or postal mail. Your correspondence must include your name, UC Application ID number and your signature (if you mail a letter), and will be available to all the campuses to which you applied.
If you receive an offer of admission, be sure to confirm with the campus admission office that they are aware of the deficient grade or schedule changes. Although you must notify the campus of these changes, we cannot guarantee that a campus can go back to review an application after correspondence has been received. Make sure to save a copy of your correspondence just in case.

Thank you for the help! Would I have to also contact the school I got accepted to if it fails to be a C- by the end of the grading period?
For the UC’s, you send the information to the email address. If accepted, you should check with each school to make sure they received the information regarding a deficient grade. They will decide on a case by case basis what options you have such as waiting until your final transcript, retaking the class the following semester or summer etc…
Most schools do not like rescind so if you have been doing well up until this point, with luck they will think it is just a blip on your good record and will see how you finish out your Senior year.
Regarding the other schools on your list, I suggest you wait until all decisions are in, review the requirements on your provisional contract and take it from there. If you do end up with a D, if possible I would try to sign up for the retake to show the schools are you serious about setting things right.
