First semester schedule - comments?

I know lots of experienced IU students, grads and parents lurk on this forum, so I'm curious about what you think of my daughter's first semester schedule. If it's good, this can also be used as a sample schedule for other incoming freshmen who are working on building their schedules. Daughter is a Kelley direct admit, not sure yet of major but probably Business Management for now, also interested in a minor in Spanish and possibly math.

COLL-S 103 Expectations of Adulthood (honors), 3 credit hours, fills 1 of 2 A&H classes (this is an Intensive Freshman Seminar class that she is taking Aug. 5 - 16)
BUS-T 175 Kelley Compass I, 1.5 credit hours, I-Core pre-req
BUS-T 134 KLLC Community Development, 1 credit hour, first 8 weeks, required for Kelley Living Learning Community
BUS-A 100 Basic Accounting Skills, 1 credit hour, second 8 weeks, I-Core pre-req
POLS-Y 100 American Political Controversies, 3 credit hours, pure elective since S&H requirements are all filled by I-Core pre-reqs
HISP-S 280 Spanish Grammar in Context, 3 credit hours, toward Spanish minor
BUS-K 204 The Computer in Business Honors, 3 credit hours, I-Core pre-req

It’s a total of 15.5 hours, but only 12.5 hours during the regular semester since 3 hours will be during IFS, so it seems like a pretty comfortable schedule for an incoming freshman.

Rough plan for 2nd semester is:
BUS-C 106 Business Presentation Honors, 3 hours
BUS-T 144, KLLC required class, 1 hour
HISP-S 326 Intro to Spanish Linguistics, 3 hours, toward Spanish minor
either MATH-M 118 Finite or MATH-M 301 or 303 Linear Algebra to meet Kelley I-Core Finite pre-req and possibly toward a math minor, 3 hours
ECON-E 201 Microeconomics, 3 hours
an A&H class, 3 hours, fills 2nd of 2 A&H req's
TOTAL 16 hours

Is your D able to take summer classes at a local CC? If so, I might recommend pushing E201 to the summer as it’s a difficult class. If she can’t, I’d recommend dropping one of those classes for second semester as it’s pretty tough to combine micro with a 300-level language class and a 300-level math class or finite (which many kids struggle with). I’d see how first semester goes and potentially reassess based on feedback from other students and herself.

First semester looks good, although A100 is a pitfall for most students.

Good idea take HISP S280 as it will also give you automatic credit for S200 and S250, which will mean your World Cultures/World Languages requirement will be complete, without actually even taking those classes.

Given you daughter’s math prowess, I am guessing a lot of people she meets will advise her to major in finance. Management is not a particularly desired major at Kelley; only about 10-15% of Kelley students major in management. Kelley students strong in math often major in finance with minors in math and econ. That combination looks very good on their resumes and the two tough liberal arts minors differentiate you in a very good way from the huge majority of the 700 or so finance grads Kelley produces every year.

I agree with soccergurl that microecon at IUB can be a gpa killer. Take a look at some sample tests and see that you have to know the concepts in quite a bit of depth to do well on the departmental midterm and final. [Previous Exams](http://mypage.iu.edu/~econcore/past-exams.html) You might consider A205 Honors Financial Accounting instead of E201 in Spring. Especially if your daughter is applying to business honors, A205 with Prof Pratt will look great on her resume. Probably also easier, all other things being equal, to get a higher grade in A205 than micro. It is difficult to get less than a solid B in A205; plus it will be another honors course, and it meets in small sections only twice a week unlike the huge A201 sections.
