Feedback on Freshman Kelley Schedule

Hey everyone,

I will be a Kelley direct admit freshman this fall and also a member of Hutton. As long as my AP tests went well, I will receive credit for AB Calculus, Micro/Macro economics, and United States government. I also have dual credit for personal finance and advanced accounting from high school (will see if these transfer at orientation). I am taking Finite and Human Nutrition at community college over the summer. I received a test score exemption for W131. With incoming credits in mind, I was just hoping to get feedback on the schedule I have worked out so far. I would like to take 15-16 credits my first semester. I am thinking about adding business presentations honors or technology honors, but I am unsure if two honors courses in one semester will be too much.I understand that business presentations/computer in business honors provide recommendations for business honors so maybe I should just take regular level technology. For general education requirements, I believe I only need 6 credit hours for arts and humanities as well as world languages and cultures. Do a majority of Kelley students fulfill world culture by studying abroad or taking language courses? Any advice on which arts and humanities courses to take/avoid would also be appreciated. Thanks for the help!

A100 Basic Accounting Skills (1)
KLLC Community Development (1)
K204 Computer in Business Honors (3)
T175 Kelley Compass 1 (1.5)
X170 How Business Works (3) (Doesn't fulfill any requirements, could replace with another gen ed)
FOLK-F Introduction to Folklore (3)
Total: 12.5 credit hours

Congratulations on entering IU with so many requirements already fulfilled! K201/204 is a prereq for Technology or Technology Honors (X201/202), so Technology Honors is not an option for first semester. I do recommend Technology Honors for 2nd semester, unless you absolutely hate K204 (not likely). There are plenty of students who take Business Presentations in the same semester as K201/204. The issue is that they both have big group projects at the end of the semester, so you will be very busy and may have some scheduling issues. The nice thing is that both K204 and C104/106 don’t have finals. Well, K204 does have a final, but it’s not during finals week (at least that is how it was for my daughter in fall 2013). So you will have a light finals load. If you don’t want to overload yourself with big group projects at the end of the semester, you could take a WLC class or just any class that sounds fun to get up to 15.5 credit hours. I don’t have any specific suggestions for good A&H classes but there are older posts on CC that have some suggestions. I also don’t know what is the most popular way to fulfill WLC requirement - language, culture or study abroad. My daughter is minoring in Spanish and plans to study abroad, so she is doubly covered! In general I do not think taking 2 honors classes in the same semester is “too much”. There isn’t necessarily more work in the honors classes, they just go into more depth. One more note about Business Presentations Honors - the sections tend to fill up fast. If you have an early orientation date, that may be another reason to take it first semester. But no matter which semester you take it, if you don’t get in it right away, register for a C104 section and put yourself on the wait list for a C106 section. My daughter has been very successful in getting into classes from wait lists.

Thanks so much for your feedback stbemtpynest! I have orientation on June 11-12 so hopefully I won’t have any problems signing up for Business Presentations if i decide to take it as well.

Don’t take X170. You will take plenty of business courses later. Take C106 for at least an A-.

Don’t take X170. Try to focus on taking classes that fulfill requirements and if you still have room pick up some SPH-I classes which include bowling, basketball, volleyball, billiards, ping pong, etc. Personally I would recommend taking FOLK-F 111 instead of FOLK-F 101. Both are an easy A but FOLK-F 111 fulfills both a WC and A&H while F101 does not. For your other gen ed requirements I suggest GEOL-G 104 (N&M credit) and REL-A 250 (another WC & A&H credit filler). My suggested schedule would be this:

BUS-C 106
BUS-K 204
FOLK-F 111
GEOL-G 104
BUS-T 175
KLLC Community Development Class
BUS-A 100

That would be 15.5 credits with two honors course (C106 and K204) and with as smart as you seem this is a very manageable schedule. With how far ahead you are I would recommend getting a head start on Kelley classes. Trust me. I am a standard admit student and most of my friends were direct admits and didn’t take advantage and I am even further ahead than some of them!

With that schedule above that would mean you would have to finish the following classes before I-Core (Junior year):

A&H Class
WC Class
BUS-C 204
STAT-S 301
BUS-T 275
BUS-X 201
BUS-L 201
BUS-A 201
BUS-A 202
BUS-D 270
BUS-D 271
BUS-G 202

If you are “in state” I would recommend taking BUS-A 202 over the summer at a regional IU campus (very easy) and also look into BUS-L 201 online at Ivy Tech so that you can get those credits as well. Overall, if I were you this is the schedule path I would take.

Freshman Fall
BUS-C 106
BUS-K 204
FOLK-F 111
GEOL-G 104
BUS-T 175
KLLC Community Development Class
BUS-A 100

Freshman Spring
KLLC Community Development Class???
REL-A 250
BUS-A 201
BUS-X 201
BUS-G 202
Fluff Class

Freshman/Sophomore Summer
BUS-L 201 (Online)
BUS-A 202

Sophomore Fall
STAT-S 301
BUS-C 204
BUS-D 270
BUS-T 275
Major/Minor Requirement

Sophomore Spring
BUS-D 271
Major/Minor Requirements

With this plan/layout you will very easily be able to double major and also add a minor or two if you chooses, you could also try to get really far ahead and take I-Core the spring of your sophomore year. That means you would have all of Sophomre summer, Junior fall, Junior spring, Junior summer, Senior fall, Senior spring, to work on your majors/minors. Hope this was helpful and best of luck!

You have a great start on the icore prerequisites.

You wrote in another thread that you were going to major in accounting. You will need to be on pace to have 150 credits at graduation in order to even interview with Big Four companies and most national and regional accounting firms. This is doable in eight semesters at IUB if you do a lot of cc classes. You should have enough resources from IUB/Kelley websites to map out your whole 150 credits. Of course, you won’t have to stick like glue to any plan you make now, but you will get a real good idea of what you need each semester to stay on track for the 150.

You are taking a human nutrition class this summer? If you were taking the equivalent of A201 you could get a big jump on meeting requirements for the accounting major. You would need only a solid C or higher to transfer the accounting credit to IUB/Kelley. It would also make A100 much easier for you.

Remember that accounting is one of the very few Kelley majors that you can take upper-level courses before you take Icore. Taking A311 Intermediate Accounting I spring semester of your sophomore year will set you apart favorably from many other accounting majors during the Fall/Junior year recruiting period, when the Big Four and big regional firms are looking for interns for the following summer. Here is a list of the accounting major requirements and courses. A337 Accounting Information Systems is the only course that requires Icore.

“I also have dual credit for personal finance and advanced accounting from high school (will see if these transfer at orientation)” ---- Find out from your state accounting board if they will accept credit for these classes toward your 150 credits needed to sit for the cpa exam (if your state requires 150). They probably will not accept the “advanced accounting” class, as they tend not to accept credit more than one of two classes that have similar content. The advanced accounting class from your high school may match too closely the content of Kelley or other accounting classes that you might take from a cc. Whether some of these credits will be accepted would affect how many credits you need from IU/Kelley to reach 150 credits.

Really appreciate the advice ace550, OGmudboner, and bthomp1!

At this point I will not enroll in X170 and definitely replace it with C106. You guys also suggested taking A201, A202, and/or BUS-L 201 this summer. I am enrolled in human nutrition for the second summer session which starts July 7th so I still have time to withdraw. However, I am an out of state student and not sure how easy it is to transfer business courses over. My local community college offers financial accounting and the legal environment of business as online courses that I could still enroll in. OGmudboner, you mentioned taking BUS-L 201 through ivy tech online. Would that be possible for an out of state student? If community college business courses for out of state students don’t transfer easily, I will probably just stick with human nutrition to knock out the science requirement.

Thanks for the advice on gen eds OGmudboner. I will check to see if those courses have openings yet when the academic planner becomes available since it is currently down for maintenance.

Go to IU’s Credit Transfer Service to see if Financial or Legal classes are accepted. And, if they are not, if may be because no one from your area has taken those classes and gone through the effort of submitting the course to the CTS for approval. Worth a try, good luck! <a href=“CTS : Indiana University Bloomington”>http://cts.admissions.indiana.edu/index.cfm

If I am unable to take an accounting course over the summer, is taking both A201 and A202 and in spring semester not recommended?

DS2 took FOLK F111. It is somewhat painful due to the music selection. But, it is a relatively easy course grade wise. The advantage is that it satisfies both A&H and WC. Study abroad can take care of the WC requirement. But, it is expensive. All other interesting courses that can double count A&H and WC are filled up. But, you can always take those in Spring.

You can also consider PSY P101 for N&M with Thomassen or Hullinger or even others. You can check the following links:

Recommendations for Freshman/Sophomore Summer?
Sophomore Fall?

@nstraub I would just roughly follow the degree map and make sure you are taking plenty of I-Core prereqs, but you seem to be doing well so far. Also, I’m in your Old Testament class. Hopefully the midterm will not be too difficult Monday
