First-Year Honors Program and Regents e-mail UC Santa Cruz

I just got an email from UC Santa Cruz inviting me to apply for the First-Year Honors Program and scholarship. I am wondering whether this means admission. I checked my admission status on the portal online and it is still in review.
Here is the full letter in case you were wondering.

Dear X,

It is my pleasure to invite you to apply to the highly regarded First-Year Honors Program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. First-Year Honors Program (FYHP) participants connect with distinguished faculty mentors, participate in a year-long sequence of special honors courses, receive priority enrollment the first year, and live among other high achieving scholars. In addition, you will also be considered for a Campus Merit or Regents Scholarship, contingent upon your admission and completion of a brief online application. The $20,000 Regents Scholarship paid over four years represents the most prestigious honor from the University of California.

Acceptance into our FYHP and selection for a Regents or Campus Merit Scholarship are limited to a select number of students who have demonstrated academic excellence. This invitation recognizes your outstanding achievements in high school and strong potential to excel in university studies. The FYHP, offered through Cowell College and Crown College, provides an intensive and challenging academic experience, opportunities to forge social links with intellectual peers, and opportunities to discuss undergraduate research. For more information see the Undergraduate Honors Program web site. If, after looking at the web site, you still have questions, please contact the Faculty Director of Undergraduate Honors Programs, Professor Raoul Birnbaum, at rbirnb@ucsc.edu.

Please express your interest in FYHP and/or the Regents or Campus Merit Scholarship by completing the brief online application which will require your Student ID listed above, no later than February 28, 2014. The scholarships are not tied to participation in the FYHP, rather your enrollment at UC Santa Cruz.

If you have questions regarding this process, please call our Financial Aid and Scholarship Adviser, Rebecca Levelle, at (831) 459-3627. We will e-mail final decisions by March 30, 2014.

I applaud your academic achievements and wish you best of luck as you pursue your educational goals!

Sincerely,

George Blumenthal
Chancellor

Also if anyone else got it, would you mind sharing your stats. Few of my friends with higher GPA did not get it so I am curious.

My D received the same email today and her stats are:

UW GPA 3.85, W GPA 4.35, UC GPA 4.12

SAT CR 750, M 650, W 630 Overall 2030 (W was 690 on first sitting, but 2nd sitting had higher over all score)
ACT Comb 31, Eng 34, Math 27, Science 28, Reading 36, Writing 08 (one sitting only)

She is an in-state, DE student who will graduate HS with an AA in Liberal Art Studies, low income from one of the lowest ranked districts in the state, although she qualified for ELC (actually both state and local context) She is ranked 8 in her class, and her HS is the highest ranked in the district. EC’s are not fantastic, primarily due to financial constraints (transportation was a big issue) as well as attending high school and maintaining 8-12 college units per semester. She is very involved in drama at her school, and does annual theater competitions although no major awards for that. She is a practice of Art major. No URM or sports (not offered at her school, but she wouldn’t have done them anyway).

Bump! Hi, y’all, I’m new here, by the way  and I just got this email too. Does it mean that we’re guaranteed acceptance? That’s what I’ve heard, in regard to the UC Regents Scholarship emails…

Thanks - and good luck, y’all! :)

I got the same e-mail. I had a 4.0 UW and 4.29 W cumulative GPA at the time of applying and also a 1940 on the SAT.

I got the letter too!

GPA 4.0 UW / 4.318 W (dunno UC GPA…)
SAT 2280 (CR 760 / M 740 / W 780)
ACT 34 (E 36 / M 34 / CR 34 / S 33)

Congrats to everyone else, and good luck to those who’ve yet to hear back!

I got it too! Does it mean we’re accepted?
GPA 3.93 UW / 4.12W
SAT 2160 (CR 660 / M 800 / W 700)
Biology SAT (700)
Math II SAT (790)

I got the email too! And I was also wondering about the stats of other applicants, so thanks for this post!
My stats:
GPA 3.93(UW)
SAT 2020(CR 600 M770 W650)
Biology M 600
Math II 660

What does this invitation mean exactly? Does this mean we have a decent chance of being accepted?

If you look at previous posts, an email that invites you to apply for Regents is basically like an early acceptance letter. yay!

GPA: 3.83/4.1
UC GPA: 4.10
ACT: 34
SAT II: USH (770), Bio (710), Lit (710)

Congrats to everyone!

My daughter got this email today too, but before we could excited about that UCLA called to invite her to interview for their film program.

GPA: 3.8\4.1
ACT 29
SAT 1890
EC’s are mainly in broadcasting where she has held the top leadership position at her school and they have won many awards as a program and she has several individual awards as well.

Congrats to all. UCSC is a great school but she is really hoping for UCLA.

I was so excited to receive this e-mail!

UW GPA: 3.75
W GPA: 4.0
UC GPA: 4.05
ACT: 29

Does anyone know what criteria are used to determine recipients? D has 4.0 UW, 4.33 UC Capped, 4.68 W, 33 ACT, 500+ hrs community service, leadership, good personal statement but was not selected. Just curious as to what standards are used.

Who knows?

@caligirl14

Chances are UCSC knows that your daughter will probably not attend the school, they know that UCSC is a safety for her. They would want to use the Regents scholarship to attract students who could possibly choose to go.

@godiva123 Perhaps but what better way to entice a student than with a Regents scholarship? I think maybe there are some other criteria that are considered. Oh well, college admissions (and related things like scholarship considerations) are often a mystery to us lay persons. Congrats to all who were selected!

My daughter was also in line with others on GPAs and SATs and high ECs, but did not get the email. I’m sure they can’t give it to everyone! Congrats to all of you who did receive it!

The First Year Honor Program at UCSC doesn’t seem to be the same thing as a Regents invite, but they do imply on the honor’s page on their website that getting an invite means you are in:

Admission Details

Admission to the UCSC First-Year Honors Program is by invitation. A select group of UCSC applicants offered admission to the university will be invited to join the program, based on their record of achievement.

I got it too. Pretty sure I’m in. I wish they would just be explicit and say “You’re in!” like UC Riverside, but no.

GPA: 3.63
HPA: 4.09
ACT: 29
SAT: 2020 (640 math, 680 reading, 700 writing)

I don’t understand that reasoning. If she chooses not to go, they won’t have used a Regents on her. Right? So what is lost by offering Regents to all the top applicants?

I agree @SoCalDad2. That leads me to believe that they looked beyond the stats at other factors, and she didn’t have whatever it is they were looking for. It’s all good - I was just curious.

With her stats, your daughter will hear positively from a lot of colleges.
