First Year Move-In

so how was it? are you guys impressed? any problems?

Amazing. I friggin love Cornell!

It went very smoothly, and I'm sure that it did for a lot of other people.

Thank you Orientation Committee! We were scheduled for the 2 - 5 shift, got there about 10 minutes early and you guys had everything up into the 4th floor dorm room by 2. Wish there had been room to pack some thank you treats for you guys, but there wasn't a spare inch of space in the car. Guess this is a pay it forward thing.

It was the most organized event I have ever seen - moved in 3000 kids. It took us total of 30 minutes from arriving to get everything up to our D's 5th floor room. We didn't have to carry anything up. But it took us all day to unpack. Thank-you. We told our daughter to help out when it's her turn. We were very impressed.

We arrived at about 8:45 am (would have been 8 am, but I forgot my cell phone in the motel room -- in Cortland -- and didn't realize it until we had been on the road for about 10 minutes. We went back for it since without it, D and I would never have been able to keep track of each other all day.)

D, her keys, and all her possessions were in her room before 10 am. Extraordinary. The move-in people were fast, efficient, and pleasant -- even later in the day when it got hot. And absolutely nothing got lost. D insisted on carrying her own laptop and musical instrument because she was afraid they would disappear, but she probably didn't even need to take this precaution. I should also add that the four boxes we shipped through Big Red Shipping and Storage and the rental refrigerator we had pre-ordered were all waiting in D's room, exactly as they should have been.

I was extremely impressed. I have also done move-in with my older child at a different university, and Cornell did it much, much better. I had been concerned about move-in because D's room is up two flights of stairs, and I can't carry boxes up stairs because I have a bad leg and need to hold the stair rail. I need not have worried. I didn't carry a single thing up the stairs. All I did was help unload the car, drive it to the periphery lot (which is not really that far away), and walk back.

darn, in our college, we do all the moving, no one really helps or cares that much =/

Cornell is kind of forced to have a lot of help available on move-in day because there is almost no parking anywhere near the freshman dorms. For example, 200 people had to move in to the dorm section where my daughter lives, but you can only park four cars there at a time. Without an efficient move-in system, there would be total chaos. Still, Cornell went beyond the minimum required and made what could have been an ordeal into an essentially painless experience for many (probably most) families.

Our D almost decided to come home with us because it was so cold on Sat morning. She said, "It's Aug and it's 45 degree."

Do you think we could get the same treatment on move-out?
