Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

@sushiritto

Do you follow Rogue on IG?

This afternoon was a short video of cj_cummings do a 429.9# clean and jerk…and making it look smooth & under control.

Holy wow.

Respect.

Helpful input @Midwest67 . Not sure lifting would be my thing, but it is interesting to read about it. Probably it could help core strength, a concern of mine.

Light-weight reporting in.
I did so well when I was home more, but work project has made me crazy, and I’m not exercising like I should. I suspect I won’t return to being really good (for me) until next spring.
I do ride my bike close to 70 miles last weekend, but I’m not exercising much at all during the work week. Things should settle down soon and I hope to get back to at least some midweek exercise.

I’m not on IG, but I watched the video. Pretty friggin’ awesome. It was a “clean” day for me and I’m getting pretty close to my old PR which was set when I was a bit heavier.

It’s interesting that he used a push jerk technique. Most competitive Oly lifters use the split jerk technique. I was taught you can jerk more weight overhead using the split technique, because you can get your body lower during the jerk movement. But I’m sure it’s whatever makes him/you feel most comfortable.

@1214mom - 70 miles on weekend biking is awesome!

In previous discussions here I’ve shared that strength training may be the one effective thing you CAN do in your last decades.

Meaning, getting into your 70s, 80s, 90s, many find they have to cut back or drop their “sport”. Building and maintaining your muscle mass + bone strength is so important to QOL later in life!

Re: core strength. Squats and deadlifts will build a lot of muscle throughout your torso (plus lower body too). I think it’s pretty common for people to equate core strength with planks or ab work, but those spinal erectors deserve respect for all they do! :slight_smile:

Barbell Logic has just dropped a Health Series (podcasts) with Dr. Jonathan Sullivan (co-author of The Barbell Prescription, Greysteel Gym owner, Starting Strength Coach). I have not started it yet, but I’m looking forward to listening!

The top of my foot was bothering me this morning so I only did a 30 minute walk/run. My pace per mile is down to 14:00, which is a big improvement. I don’t think it’s anything bad, but I didn’t want to push it. I’ll do some work on the TRX straps later and think of all you great weight lifters.

I have come down with something…:frowning: Hoping it is “just” a stomach bug (got COVID tested today). It has knocked me on my tush, for sure. Every muscle in my body is screaming, my head feels like it is being squeezed in a vice and I’ve had plenty of opportunity to inspect the paint job on the wall directly across from the toilet over the past 36 hours.

That is my long whiny way of saying I have done no exercise and don’t foresee doing any in the very near future.

“they went through all of the data and accounted for all potential causes” - I was glad to see that noted because often (other articles) it is hard to know if “doing X” makes people healthy or if healthy people are more likely to “do X”.

Enjoyed a 3.5 round trip hike today, not much elevation gain but definitely needed to concentrate on footing in many places. I didn’t think I’d nap when I went to bedroom to read and maybe-nap (I was up a lot last night), but wow I really did.

@DeeCee36

I hope you recover quickly. Please update us this week if you think of it.

@DeeCee36 here’s hoping you have a better health day tomorrow. You’re right not to push your body!

Got on the bike this morning for an hour catching up on some podcasts. Foot is feeling better. Hope you are ok, @DeeCee36 !

Had a two-fer day! Swam in the morning then met a friend for a walk in the woods at lunch. I need to do that more often. Lately I work out hard in the AM and then sit on my butt all day.

Feeling loads better today - thanks for the well-wishes. I imagine it was just a 48 hours stomach bug, but as I am still awaiting COVID test results (hoping for tomorrow) I plan on laying low until I have the all-clear. I’m hopeful I’ll be meeting my friend for tennis Saturday morning.

I’ve been listening to the Barbell Logic podcast series with Dr. Jonathan Sullivan.

I highly recommend the one titled Female Masters.

I think that episode is good for females new to strength training or those considering strength training.

Good Morning everyone. Today is the start of a 4 day weekend for me (use or lose PTO) and I took advantage with a 3.5 mile walk outside. Earlier I did a 3 mile treadmill speed workout so I have my steps in for the day! Will likely take a second walk with H when he gets home from work.

Tomorrow’s plan is to meet my running group for an 8 miler then there is an outdoor Pilates class in the afternoon which is a fundraiser for a local group which collects food for school age children.

The weather here in Chicagoland is going to be VERY nice this weekend. I hope you are getting the same @FallGirl !!!

Did an 8 minute slow running stretch and then a 4 and 3 2 minute jogs during my hour outside. Also working on pushups. Still on knees for now.

@Midwest67 - it is gorgeous today and should be good tomorrow. Unfortunately rain is in the forecast for both Sunday and Monday so we’ll see.
