About my running mileage, not feeling as guilty today.
I ran my neighborhood 5K route, plus some zig-zagging to avoid getting near people. Sunny and a mild 60 degrees. I can deal with that.
A Happy New Year to everyone.

Last walk of 2020 was 4.5 miles on the greenway that runs along a creek from near my daughter’s apartment into downtown. It was a cool out and back walk.
Mileage count for the year was 1192.5 miles. That missing 7.5 miles will haunt me
Happy New Year Everyone!
Thanks to all for helping keep my on track. I hope to improve my fitness level next year, but feel like I did fine this year. Maybe next year I should focus more on nutrition.
5.8 miles of glorious Nordic skiing. It was a perfect day. I was rusty but any day skiing is a better day.
Total for the year
1005.8 miles 352 hours and 14 minutes. Total days active 309
I’m pretty obsessive recording everything on strava!
The Apple Watch has helped me to remember to keep track on Strava/other apps. Great stats @deb922 and @jmnva06.
@1214mom I like reading any nutrition suggestions! AFTER I eat a homemade brownie and ice cream tonight…
I don’t track anything but my calorie intake (and i’ve quit doing that the past couple of weeks). But I know I’ve worked out more days than not this year. I checked myfitnesspal, and I’m down 10 pounds this year, even with the holiday weight gain of 2.5 pounds. Good job, everyone! I appreciate this community.
I have never tracked my mileage, but I may start this year. I am guessing it will be easy if I figure out which app to use with my new spin bike. It might not happen today, but soon, maybe…
Hope everyone stays healthy and continues to do good things fitness-wise this year!
I am a nerdy numbers person (accountant) so that is likely why I track everything. I have an excel spreadsheet (surprised, anyone?) on which I track running and walking mileage, yoga classes, if I did strength training, etc. I rotate between a few pair of running shoes, so I make sure I track mileage on each pair. I also note if the miles are treadmill or outside and applicable weather conditions. Just went through my 2020 data yesterday and set up my 2021 sheet.
Ran 5.0 outside this morning (I’m doing an online challenge) and will zoom a yoga class soon.
Cheers to continued fitness in 2021!
I use a combo of RunKeeper and Strava for my activities.
Didn’t add up my minutes or times of strength training but ended up with 1745 miles of running/inside cycling/purposeful walking.
Oodles of dog walking - but not counted - our new dog has a decent walk time!
3.25 mile run this morning before an all day rain/sleet .
I use MapMyRun app to get pacing/time/distance info for runs (usually 5k) , so I have those totals “for free” if I want them. In MyNetDiary, I add quick entries for running, walking and exercise classes to get “calorie credit”, but I don’t go back for totals. Since I am at my weight goal (ok… near it, after holidays) I could stop the MyNetDiary tracking, but I’ve come to really like the ability to check nutrition info daily and trends.
@1214mom and others considering focus on nutrition, I started a new thread - HealthyHabits - Food Tips (2021 and beyond) - #2 by Colorado_mom
I rode my spin bike 75 minutes today. Started to quit at an hour, then decided to shoot for an hour and a half, then decided I was done at 75 minutes. My goal is an hour, so I did fine. I THINK I rode about 23 miles, but I only l paid attention to the first hour’s mileage. I have to learn to use the computer and software on my bike with my IPad.
Do remember as well that this thread is fitness, nutrition and health (as title of thread) welcomes nutrition/healthy eating or cooking posts as well! As well as posting struggles with the above.
Fine for another thread of course but I for one even though I exercise daily can always benefit from tips, recipes, motivation to eat better.
For me fitness, nutrition and health work best hand in hand!
Definitely nutrition and health go hand in hand! I made a separate thread because there will be some folks interested in food/nutrition discussions that have no interest in the details of our exercising.
Looking for input as to which digital fitness subscription is best for an over 50yo female that needs to work up to a reasonable fitness level. I’m considering Peloton Digital, Beachbody, Starting Strength, and open to other ideas. Don’t want to spend more than $20/month.
What kind of exercise would you like to do? Without specific equipment? Strength training? Indoor cycling? That would help is to recommend!
The best exercise is the one you can manage to enjoy and be willing to do.
There are actually several good “series” for free on YouTube. I pull them up on my TV.
I do many from this series - range in amount of time and skill.
Thanks, I’ll take a look at HASfit. I have a yoga mat, elliptical, jump rope, two 10lb dumbells, two 5lb dumbells, one 35lb kettlebell, one 15lb kettlebell, a set of exercise bands, a yoga strap, and a “pillow” thing that goes under your back for situps.
I have some mobility issues and, as a result, if a video moves quickly between exercises on the floor and standing up, I typically fall behind. I can’t do lunges or burpees. I’m primarily interested in strength and flexibility. I have an Amazon Fire for my TV and an iPad so looking for something compatible.
I agree that the best program/exercise is one that you enjoy and fits your personality. That being said, I have experience with Beachbody and can describe that one.
I’ve been a runner and gym rat for 30-35 years but have subscribed to Beachbody for the last 3 years. I do the $100/yr deal and I don’t do any shakeology, nor have I bought anything else from them. You will likely be assigned a “coach” which is a bit of a misnomer. You don’t need any credentials to be a coach. Think of them more like a group leader who gets $$$ if you buy anything else from Beachbody. But the coach has groups of similar people who work out and it can be very motivating checking in each day and encouraging each other.
Pros - they have MANY MANY programs, probably thousands of workouts for all levels and likes. They have yoga, dancing, all the way up to typical weightlifting and everything in between. Everything is scalable for your level. Most of the advanced programs even have a modifier showing an easier version. A middle aged newbie would not feel out of place. You can do all the workouts at home or anywhere. I download the workouts on my phone and do them in the gym (non pandemic)
Con - I’d say the biggest is that you will need a lot of stuff for most of the programs. You’ll need a wide variety of dumbbells. That’s probably the biggest cost. You have resistance bands and loops, sliders, some use steps, jump ropes, etc. not all the programs use everything, so it’s not necessary to buy all at once. And I got my stuff (I had to buy the loops and sliders) off Amazon for much cheaper. Also, if you are a die hard weight person, there aren’t a lot of programs just for that, so you might get bored. I have a few favorites and rotate through. (Most programs are 6-13 weeks long though you can mix and match however you want)
I’d suggest starting with some free exercise videos. Eventually you may want a paid subscription, but sampling various online freebies might help you refine what you do and don’t want.
I like Fitness Blender - FB. (It has paid options but so far I just have done a few of the freebies). Can’t remember who kindly recommended it, probably in this forum. I mostly run and do local rec center zoom live classes, but the short, early FB routines add more variety.
You can use FB filter to find a class to your preferences
@HMom16 one of the things I like about the HASFit videos is that it’s a husband and wife team and she always does simpler modifications. They encourage you to challenge yourself but do what you are able. Videos seem to range from 15 mins to 40 minutes. Many are 20-30. Look for “beginner” in the title to get started!
I think @FallGirl does Fitness Blender too!
