@jackief LOL I love that phrase - you can’t out exercise a bad diet!
Had a nice easy bonus run last night after work so looked to replicate that this morning. It actually wasn’t as easy but that’s life and it’s done!!

I love to cross country ski but haven’t done much of it in years. We rarely get enough snow to allow me to do it without driving to snow.
Folks were back from the holidays so soccer was more crowded last night (maybe 8v8). Adding numbers definitely impacted my step count. I think I was someplace around 1K fewer over the 90 minutes.
Since we needed to get out of the way of the cleaning lady we did our daily walk this AM. Total distance was 4.25 (3.25 to bagel place and 1 home)
Thought y’all might enjoy this book review.
I love when I can make existing things work!
Today was a gym morning. I split the time between the stairmonster and bike. Went to the shed to do a core workout followed by P90X3 yoga (30 min).
Because of our current spike plus the New Year’s crowds, I also contacted/emailed the gym asking them to better enforce the mask policy. At least 75% (probably more like 90%) of people wear a mask by the front desk, put it in their locker/gym bag and only get it out when they leave. I asked if they could at least enforce it for 3 months. Ironically, the few people who do wear masks are the ones who lift the hardest. I won’t get my hopes up, but at least I tried.
Hubby has left for a grocery pickup errand. He’s rarely out of the house, so my first “exercise” of the day will be mental… play some Christmas tunes on the piano (I’m VERY rusty, like to play when alone in the house). Then I will try a rec center/zoom strength/stability class. It requires a chair and will likely be more for elderly exercisers, but the time slot is right and I have a goal to try as many of the different classes (all available in my $5/week pay-as-you-go plan) as possible.
my take on fitness youtube channels mentioned earlier.
I’ve done several Hasfit videos and I do like them. But I recently found some fitness blender ones which for me are giving a better bang for the buck. I think partly is because I don’t need to be explicitly shown the modifications the woman in the hasfit videos does, I don’t often need them and can figure them out myself. But I also like the swifter pace of the fitness blender workouts. The tone lets me know when it is time for the next exercise, and a preview is shown in the upper corner. Therefore the transitions are quicker and I think they cover more in a set amount of time vs similar hasfit.
Of course YMMV but for me I will stick with the couple FB I am doing now- both an upper body strength one and a lower back rehab/core which DH is joining me as he needs work in this area.
@jackief-- I’m impressed by anyone that can do videos. That is so not my thing. I would like to discuss the fitness value of Wii Fit U though
We just did our base 3.5 mile walk tonight
I do a combination of zoom fitness classes from local rec center and short online videos (great for flexible scheduling). It’s a nice complement to my outdoor running, especially in winter.
I have a wii fit. Maybe I should dust it off and see how I do on the balance areas. Balance and flexibility are big weak points for me, which is why I have done some yoga and should do more.
For me, I cast the videos onto a big TV in the workout room. I could not do them from a phone or even tablet. This is a deal breaker for me to do the ones included in the ww program, as I do not see the ability to cast them. I have a chromecast attached to that tv, and it is a smart tv.
like you jmnva06 I prefer walking and try to walk most days. But I know I need some focus on other areas which is why I am trying to get a few upper body exercises into my week.
I didn’t think I’d like videos until I tried them. as I’ve mentioned, my mind is my biggest weakness and focusing on what they are saying helps me to forget I’m dying. I would prefer a TV for sure! But I don’t have that and the phone works. I mostly just listen to the directions. If it’s a new workout with odd moves, I often preview it the night before to see what they are doing. But my odd thing is that I don’t like working out with other people. I would hate group work, especially if people were “encouraging” me in my face. I don’t like people paying attention to me. I shut down. In my 30-35 years of exercising, I’ve never done a group fitness (weights/aerobics) class. I hadn’t done any class at all until yoga. For some reason, that was OK. I could lose myself inside my head there. But I hated it when the classes were super small (i.e. < 3). I didn’t want the instructor paying any attention to me. I like to be lost in a crowd.
Went to the gym to ride the bike as it was supposed to be sleeting/snowing. It wound up holding off and now might now do much of anything. My rear end hurt so bad afterwards and then at home in the shed, it was P90X legs and back - lol. My butt cried when it heard the news. It somehow made it through, though I admit the first couple of reps of each move were pretty shallow.
I don’t always love videos but they are filling a niche for me this time of year when I can’t/shouldn’t be out running in the dark but I want to get exercise in before I leave for work - when it’s still dark! If I had to do a 45 minute video I’d never last (mentally) but a 20-30 minute one fits the bill.
Can I find Fitness Blender videos on YouTube? I prefer videos on my tv over my laptop.
@abasket I think the Fitness Blender videos might be on You Tube. I watch from the website but I have connected my laptop to the big screen TV in our rec room and done them that way.
@ClassicMom98 I do not like group workouts with a few exceptions- yoga and the 261 Fearless group I joined. Because of my coordination issues I have had negative experiences with being made fun of (really) and or feeling very self conscious in group fitness. The groups I mention are non-judgemental. I am fine running a group because it requires no coordination!
@jackief - I wish we had kept our Wii! You are doing great!
Oh, during Covid I am delighting in the ability to do group class from the privacy of my own home (with camera off). That’s especially true on a zumba gold class - I used to do it in person a few years ago, but probably if there had not been a dear friend standing next to me it would have been too embarrassing to be so clutzy with strangers. I like doing it our large upstairs hall area, sunny and open to the downstairs (if hubby is watching tv at the time, he uses earphones)
Fitness Blender: I do simple short FB classes (so far only arms/9min, lower body/17min) up in my bedroom … away from hubby’s TV/youtube distractions. Because they are very easy and familiar routines (30 or 60 sec intervals), I mute the class audio and listen to NPR programs on the alarm clock radio. I put my Chromebook on a dresser (arms) or hope chest (lower body - half standing, half on the floor).
I’m not a very big fan of group workouts either. CrossFit gyms are ALL about the group workout and one of the reasons I stopped going to a CF gym. I feel distracted when working out in a big group.
I want to go back to the gym though. It’s hard to bench press when your dog is sitting on the bench with you.
I am not a coordinated person, no athletic ability whatsoever. But what I like about videos is the direction, someone telling me what to do next. Same thing I got when I had sessions with a personal trainer when I was coming back from my broken ankle, I felt I needed additional direction to get me back to the point of being able to do a group workout. If it wasn’t for covid, I would join a gym with classes.
I subscribe to the fitness blender and hasfit channels on youtube. I scroll through to get one to fit my available time and focus area. I tend to go for the longer ones in the 30-45 min range.
Good Morning! Ran .3 miles today- weather app said 30 degrees with wind chill feeling like 21, but I was comfortable and it was a pleasant day to run.
Day 9 of Dry January- we have another virtual happy hour this evening. Cheers to sparkling water with a slice of lime.
I am trying to add more strength training to my home workout. My S has a pull up bar and I found, to my embarassment, that I cannot even do one! Is there a good exercise with hand weights that I can start to do to build those muscles so that I can start using the bar?
Don’t be embarrassed. I’d say most women can’t do one. Even young fit women. It took me 10 years to get to 1 - in my teens and 20s! It’s not a natural exercise for me. What finally did it for me was doing negatives. Use a chair to help get your chin over the bar. Hold for a few sec (if possible) and the lower yourself SLOWLY down. Repeat a few times. Build up time and reps over time
