Fitness, Nutrition and Health- All Welcome (Hardcore and “Light”)

I was out of town last week, only ended up running once but did a lot of walking. Got home late afternoon on Monday and got back on track. Ran on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and today for a total of 18 miles. Yoga on Tuesday and Thursday and strength on Thursday.

I like to travel and it was especially nice to go somewhere new after not doing so for months, but it’s nice being home and back in my routine.

I decided towards the end of the strength portion of my workout, which was power cleans and muscle-ups, to go “hardcore” and do a “Murph” today.

It’s hard when you may only wear a weighted vest, once, maybe twice, a year. So, I thought why not start some early prep work now. I made a conscious choice not to make it an “all-out” effort, but just methodically make my way through unpartitioned. I even talked a little bit with other members during the workout. My time was 70 minutes, so I’ll have to knock off about 15-20 minutes on Memorial Day.

I got the Fitbit Satellite badge yesterday–35K in floors.

Our cleaning lady came this AM so we got in just over 3 miles while she was cleaning.

I was able to run on Saturday (5K + 2.5k slower) and today (5k+3.4kslower). Ha, not sure it makes sense to increase distance - I will mostly have to start over when back from our long road trip.

I was not able to get out til it was 77 degrees, quite the contrast to last Monday’s 6 inches of snow, 12 degrees. My run time was slow as expected. A treat on the lake trail was seeing dozens of happy teens (staying socially distanced I hope) have a joyous picnic and playing volleyball. Many were in bathing suits and bikinis, worshiping the much welcomed sunshine. I chatted with one friendly kid, who explained it was Senior Ditch Day (skipping classes). I smiled and said, “you don’t put a car up on the high school roof?”. He laughed and corrected me - “that’s Senior prank day, and we have some plans for that too…”

I did do the 40 mile bike ride yesterday. We had a “personal best” time. Today I did manage to get an hour of exercise in, between chores and running errands.

Checking in! It’s almost Friday! I’m into Week 1 of Phase 2, and it’s kicking my butt more than I thought it would. My AT that I dinged last week doing flying pigeon (not crow) has been troublesome, so I’ve been sticking with the bike mostly this week. I’m not a fan doing so many days in a row of that, but I have been surprisingly strong on it. I’ll take what I can get. My lifting is hard, but I feel strong while working out. It’s later when I get whooped. Today was Leg day. I noticed that I definitely have better ROM squatting and lunging than I used to. I am happy with that, but of course, could still be better. Always something to concentrate on.

I’ve also begun a quest to improve my wheel and scorpion pose. I can “do them,” but my back doesn’t bend at all. It’s pretty comical. My wheel looks like a table. So, I’ve been trying to do a lot of chest/hip flexor openers. I doubt I’ll be picture pretty, but I’d like to improve at least somewhat. I also saw a picture of someone doing grasshopper. Oh, I’d love if my body could twist like that. So, I may add that to the list. The arm balance part isn’t the problem. It’s getting my foot onto my tricep that is doubtful.

I’ve been doing the same old stuff… usually 90 minutes, combo of walking, elliptical, spin bike, outdoor bike and/or rowing machine.
I’ve done more walking this week than normal. Next week I’m at the beach and we are taking our bikes, so will hopefully get some long rides in. It will feel weird not to have all our equipment easily available. We likely won’t go to the gym at the resort place we’re staying (They may not even have one - didn’t check).

Today called for a 1 rep max on the deadlift for strength and my deadlift #’s have NOT been that wonderful lately. Everything has felt like a lot of weight. Well, today I hit a 5 lb PR, my first since 11/13/2020.

And the HIIT was 100 lightweight squats and 50 GHD sit-ups with a 12 minute time cap and I used almost every second.

Day 32 complete! Bike session again. There’s something with these stationary bikes that tear up my forearms/elbows. Riding it once/week is OK. Every day and everything is bruised/scraped. It doesn’t hurt at all. Just looks awful. Lifting workout was strong. I forgot that this phase has my all time favorite combo in it. In a one arm high plank, do slow tricep kick-backs (power up for one, slow count for 3 down) for 15 reps on each arm, followed immediately with 15 tricep push-ups. Love it. I could do without these 70 degree mornings already. I’m getting a preview of the summer to come. Wasn’t I just lifting in 32*?!

Crazy rain so less swimming this week. I am bonding with the younger women in spinning. Sisterhood of suffering.

Checking in-- nothing major to report. It is really windy here today, so struggling to think about how I get my steps in.

I’m across the river, and it’s really windy up here too. Was thinking outdoor biking, but looks like it will be walking our indoor biking for me. I didn’t set my watch to track, but I did walk around the mall pretty quickly - I think that counts for something, right?

LOL Sisterhood of Suffering. Man, I do miss spin class a little bit.

We had the wind yesterday too, and this morning was 25* colder! I did the stairmonster instead of the bike and it seemed ok. Some stretching, abs and then cardio flow. Phase 2 has 6 reps of everything vs 4. My quads were so sore, it made it a bit harder today. But I got through it.

Now I’m checking in from the Subaru dealership. Downside to owning one - we don’t have a dealer and have to drive an hour for service. We’ve made it a family affair today. Older S has been visiting all week and we will hit the outlets afterwards. Belated bday spoiling from mom.

And yesterday was a fantastic day. I found $0.26 on my walking warmup and hoped it meant it would be a good day. After several delays, my in-laws’ house finally got appraised and it was high enough. I really didn’t think it would. We should close in 10 days! Then even better, S’ GF was offered her dream job. She’s moving in with S next month. Job is located very close to S’ building. One metro stop further. Such a big relief! And then my coworker got to bring his baby home after 3.5 weeks at the hospital. He set a weight record for Duke at 34 weeks - over 9 pounds! We joked he was going to walk home

It was terribly windy yesterday but I got out early for 5 miles. Decent pace but it was a hilly route and I was still struggling a bit likely due to having donated blood on Monday.

Ran 6.4 this morning with my running buddies. It was a very slow pace- a few people are coming off of injuries/other time off.

We ended up bailing on Friday and just sat on our screen porch and watched the wind.
I coached all day on Saturday. I’m too lazy to look but I think I’ve shared that for one of my games I just walk to the field. It is just a 1/2 mile and parking is horrible so I’d end up part-way back to the house anyway. Post coaching, we walked to dinner so I had a 21K step day.

Sunday, I played 90 minutes of pickup in the morning. Just before we left the house for our walk to dinner, we got a note that they had no power so we needed a plan B. Plan B was takeout from someplace else and didn’t involve another long walk

I worked hard today. I left my shuffle charging at work, so I had to use my iphone/Spotify. So i listened to my nostalgic classical playlist - the stuff I played way back when. After my warm-up walk outside, I turned the bike up to level 9 and rode it straight for 40 minutes! (I usually do 1:30-1:45 intervals). Then back home to the C-gym for Total Body Core. Phase 2 is just exhausting to me. Lots of combo moves and heavier weights in general. Today wasn’t as heavy weight wise as leg/booty day, but I still was wiped out.

Sounds like the c-gym has been well loved over the years.

We’ve been at the beach for a couple of days. We’ve done lots of beach walking (5.5 or so miles yesterday, and I can’t remember Sunday or Monday - I think 1 day was just 2 and the other was 4 or so) and we rode our bikes 2 days - once 30 miles and the other 25. Today is a relaxation day. Tomorrow we will likely get back on our bikes. Husband hasn’t run at all this trip, which is kind of surprising. I think he’s “too old” to run and then exercise with me now.
